The main article mentions the castle found here, and you even have this engraving http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Casal-1745.jpg which states that the city and castle was taken by the Duke of Savoy in 1706, but no mention is made of this action in the article. Does information about this act exist?69.92.23.64 (talk) 12:37, 13 April 2010 (UTC)Ronald L. Hughes[reply]

I am sure it does, but I have been unable to track it down quickly. This page, a biography of Ferdinando Carlo Gonzaga Nevers, the last Duke of Mantua and Monferrato, from the Dizionario Biografico degli Italiani (rather similar to the DNB) says that Casale was taken by Savoy on 29 November of that year. The key event seems to have been the Battle of Turin, following which the French, who were in alliance with Ferdinando Carlo, were driven back across the Alps. What remained of Monferrato was then absorbed by the Duchy of Savoy (soon to become the Kingdom of Sardinia), with its southern part, to the south of the Tanaro, becoming the Province of Acqui, and the northern part, between the Tanaro and the Po, becoming the Province of Casale. By the way, the castle is the building at the front left of the engraving you mention. More important defensively was the citadel at the the extreme right. The difference in scale is clearer in this plan of the city, where the citadel is on the left and the castle on the top right. However, by 1706 this is all a bit moot: the citadel had been made defenseless in 1695, and Casale wouldn’t have been in a position to put up much of a fight. The coordinates in the article appear to be correct. If you think that they are not, you'll need to give a clear explanation of the problem. Deor (talk) 22:04, 7 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
