Order of wear[edit]

I don't believe the dates for the Victoria Cross precedence are correct. As stated, the 1954 table of precedence gave the VC precedence over the CGH and other post-1952 SA decorations and medals. However, the 1954 table was superseded by a new table published in Government Gazette 1630 dd 6 January 1967. This did not make any special provision for the VC, and placed all UK orders, decorations and medals after the SA ones. On the face of it, then, the VC outranked the CGH only from 1954 to 1967. The latest table of 2005, as did several earlier versions, state about the pre-1952 UK awards that they are worn according to the list of precedence then prevailing, so, the way I interpret it, still according to the 1954 document.

The prescription was only for the VC and other UK honours awarded to South Africans before 1952. The first two UK awards that were instituted since then (The Queen Elizabeth II Coronation Medal and the Queen's Medal for Champion Shots), were treated differently, and any VC (or any other UK award, for that matter) awarded to a South African after 1952 (I don't think there were any) would therefore still take precedence according to its status. This was, IMHO, a silly decision back then, leading to more silliness today with the 70-years-late institution of the Arctic Star...
