Very confused about this paragraph[edit]

"In total, 14 people in seven states. . . contracted botulism poisoning. . . The deaths resulted in litigation. . . ." Earlier in the article it says 8, and now it says 14. Which is it? There are no deaths mentioned anywhere else in the article. How many deaths, if any? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 199.204.56.12 (talk) 21:08, 23 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I was just going to quote the exact same thing. "The deaths" - what deaths? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 176.10.255.161 (talk) 16:33, 3 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Victim count update[edit]

I have researched countless news articles, and have tallied a total victim count of 14. I've cited some sources, which include 2 unrelated men from Maui, Hawaii (Cattle Drive brand), 1 woman from San Diego, California, and 1 woman from Atlanta, Georgia.

Texas (4):

  • Samuel and Marissa Cisneros from Abernathy (near Lubbock) were the first victims of the outbreak. Their mother later followed. The children ate Austex Hot Dog Chili Sauce for lunch on June 28th, 2007 and symptoms appeared the next day. They were diagnosed with botulism on July 7, 2007.
  • Van Alan Croft from Port Arthur - details unknown.

Ohio (3):

  • Carl Ours from New London (near Cleveland) was the second victim. He hate Castleberry's Hot Dog Chili Sauce on June 28th, 2007 and experienced double vision the next day. Date of botulism diagnosis unknown.
  • 2 other victims - details unknown.

Indiana (2):

  • Charles and Sandra Trammell from Columbia City, Indiana. Ate Castleberry's Hot Dog Chili Sauce on July 5, 2007, diagnosed with botulism poisoning on July 11, 2007.
  • 2 unconfirmed cases of botulism, one in Logansport, IN.

Hawaii (2):

  • Keith Reagan of Wailuku, Maui. Ate Cattle Drive chili on July 20, 2007. He went to the emergency room the same day and was diagnosed with botulism poisoning.
  • Jonathon Stockton of Maui also ate Cattle Drive chili, and was admitted to the hospitcal and diagnosed with botulism poisoning a day before Keith Reagan ate the same chili and was diagnosed.

Georgia (1):

  • Karmellia Ituen of Atlanta. Ate Castleberry's Chili on July 20, 2007. Admitted to the hospital and diagnosed with botulism poisoning on July 21, 2007.

New Mexico (1):

  • Christopher Caffrey ate Castleberry's products after the recall, around July 27, 2007.

California (1):

  • A woman in San Diego. The woman ate Kroger chili on July 20th, 2007 and was diagnosed with botulism. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Giltramirez (talkcontribs) 00:48, 14 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

references removed from article[edit]

  • "Castleberry's Closing Saddens Some in Community", WRDW News 12 (Georgia), September 16, 2008 [1]
  • "Recalled food may linger in stores", Mail Tribune (Oregon), August 04, 2007, [2]
  • "Investors shrug off Connors botulism loss", TheStar.com, August 15, 2007, [3]
  • "Georgia processor expands meat recall", USA Today, July 22, 2007, [4]
  • "Recalls: Botulism put scare in grocer", Pittsburgh Post-Gazzete, August 19, 2007, [5]
  • "Since You Asked: No charges in food recall", Mail Tribune (Oregon), August 09, 2007, [6]
  • "Brand might be sold", Augusta Chronicle, February 16, 2008, [7]

they're all perfectly good references, but I chose to prune them out because (a) the article was already fairly laden with good refs, and (b) some of the topics in these refs (recalled food still on shelves, people sad about the plant closing) aren't even brought up in the article. if someone wants to work them back in, more power to you. -- Khisanth (talk) 15:18, 10 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Undue weight tag?[edit]

I think the thing to ask is not if this article features the botulism poising prominently, but rather what would this article look like if this company had not poisoned people? Would there even be a page for this company? What really would there be to say that would be relevant? With that, I don’t know that the tag is useful or necessary - just a thought Additivefreesb (talk) 14:21, 4 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
