When we speak of Sicilian Americans, we still consider them Italian Americans. There is no reason for their to be a differing standard regarding the Catalan identity within the larger Spanish identity.

Because all these pages of "Mexican American", "Italian American", and all this stuff, are US Census Bureau labels, and if the US Census Bureau accepts the Catalan label, and accepts the Catalan language as one of the languages spoken in the United States, then why not create a page to collect this option of the census? Additionally the anonimous forgot that catalan people could have Spanish or French official nationallity (I mean internationally recognized nationallity) . And we could consider a broader cultural point of view, that probably would include Andorran people... User:Tonipares

The reasons are quite simple. Catalan Americans from Andorra, Northern Catalonia (France) or Alghero (Italy) don't fit within a 'Spanish identity'. What does 'Spanish identity' mean, anyway? Many Catalans of Spanish nationality/descent are Catalans by ethnicity, regardless of the fact that they can speak Spanish and/or English too, so from the point of view of ethno-linguistic statistics, a separate Catalonian category is perfectly acceptable. --Purplefire (talk) 17:32, 5 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Ferrer is valencian surname, not catalan.

Not done Find reliable sources defining them as being of Catalan origin or, more importantly (as you are talking about biographies of living people), where they self-identify as being Catalan. From what I can ascertain, making assumptions based on surnames is a breach of one of Wikipedia's cornerstone policies being no original research. Someone in their genetic lineage - perhaps 20 generations ago - being of Catalan ancestry does not equal a person's ethnicity. I think you are allowed to tick two of them. Catalan nationalists probably tick the code 204, but other catalans may tick the codes 200 and 204. The code 204 is not in the group of French ancestry but in the Spaniard ancestry. --79.155.113.50 (talk) 12:57, 23 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

'Notable people' section needs to be improved[edit]

I've tagged the 'Notable people' section as needing additional reliable sources identifying said notable as being Catalans. I'm not even going to try address the issue of ethnicity versus physical region. Many of the notables articles have been long since tagged as lacking in reliable sources already. My concern, however, is primarily the lack of sources for any Catalan connection. As I've been able to establish, many of the connections are original research based on the assumption that a surname of Catalan origin is the same thing as the person in question identifying as being Catalan, or having any known Catalan connection this side of 1600 AD. I'd suggest that all of the notables whose corresponding article has no evidence to support being a person of Catalan ancestry (either the region or ethnicity) be removed from the list pronto.
