Number of speakers[edit]

The 3.1 million figure from Ethnologue (cited to the 2000 census) looks like another error, given that the population of the whole of Sanming prefecture in the 2000 census was 2,574,000, and the Central Min area was about 950,000. The Language Atlas of China (1987) gives a figure of 683,000. That's a bit old, but probably the best we have (unless someone has access to the 2012 edition).
