Page move[edit]

I've moved the page from Central Otago wine to Central Otago wine region for two reasons. Firstly, the article is about the region more than it is about the wine; secondly, articles on other wine regions are usually titled this way

The second point may seem a little tenuous, since there are regions named "XXX wine" and "XXX wine region", but there seems to be a consistent logic to the naming:

  1. Where there is a specific wine variety which is synonymous with the region, then "region" is not used. *e.g., Moselle wine. There is no specific wine variety called Central Otago - they're pinot noirs, rhieslings, sauternes, gewurztraminers and the like - so it's hardly like Moselle.
  2. Where the article is principally on a region overall and doesn't simply deal with wine, either "XXX" or "XXX region" is used, e.g. Barossa Valley
  3. Where the article deals with several distinct areas of vineyards within a larger region, state or province, then "XXXian wine" is used, e.g. South Australian wine. Though a case could be made for this article being of that form, the Central Otago vineyards are mainly closely grouped and Central Otago certainly does not have more than one distinct wine region.
  4. Where the article deals with a single wine region that is not covered by the points above, one of two ways of disambiguating the names is used. "XXX wine region" is generally used in Australia and several other countries, as in Grampians wine region, Heathcote wine region, Canberra wine region, whereas in European countries "XXX (wine region)" seems to be most common, as in Niederlausitz (wine region) and Rheingau (wine region).

As such it makes sense to use one of these last two forms for Central Otago, and given New Zealand's similarities to Australia (I'm saying this as a Kiwi, before anyone gets their backs up!) it seemed sensible for the article to be at this title. Grutness...wha? 08:15, 24 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Moving this section here since there is not a need to have a wineguide like WP:ADVERT list of wineries, many of whom are not notable enough to have an article on Wikipedia. However, some of these wineries are notable and if articles are created for them (like with Two Paddocks), it would make sense to include them in a referenced section of prose about the current state of the wine industry in Central Otago. Nothing WP:ADVERT like in this at all. It is an encyclopedic list of the wineries which exist in this district. As such, it is in line with many similar lists on other articles relating to wine regions. It is also a perfect indication of a list containing a set of articles which should be analysed for possible future writing, and as such an invitation to editors to write those articles. This is an example of something which has long been an established part of Wikipedia's means of growth, and is vital to its continued improvement. As such, I would have moved this back to where it clearly and obviously belongs - in the article... were it not for WP:WINEGUIDE, which seems to sadly be yet another symptom of the general debasement of Wikipedia's initial aims and principles, and yet another staggering example of why Wikipedia's quality and growth have declined over the last few years. PS - I'm grumpy about the rule, not about what you did, Agne27 - nothing personal intended :) Grutness...wha? 11:48, 18 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Article update, sub-regions, GI status, etc.[edit]

So... I'm back from holiday soon and I'd like to bring this article up to date as well as create articles for the other New Zealand regions (starting at least with Marlborough and Hawke's Bay). Starter for ten, here's a recent article with some history, background, and tasting notes for recent vintages: Parker Wong, Deborah (11 June 2019). "Central Otago 4.0". The SOMM Journal. Retrieved 15 June 2019. Cheers! — Jon (talk) 13:35, 14 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
