Is Cerball the Kjarvall of Grettir's Saga? Viking Empires, 86-88 says no. Does anyone say yes, i.e. what do Hudson (PoB, 135), Anderson (ESSH, I:328) say?
- Anderson, 328, note 2: "It is clear that Kiarval who is said to have been attacked in the Barra Is. in 871 is the Irish king Cerball; but the story of Kiarval is probably false. [Then list of annals, conveniently enough]". Quotation of Grettir's saga is 320-321.
Hudson, PoB 137, "Several matters are apparent...he raided throughout Ireland, and this suggests that he was a truly great lord, on a scale rivaling the ui Neill princes. A second point is that without the record of the FA, Cerball's power would not be evident from the other surviving Irish records. [...obit in AC with MSmMR and AFmN, last Irish king in the original recension].

Note: his marriage arrangement into the High King's family is overwhelming evidence of his high status on the scene.
