Break apart and remove cleanup[edit]

A request[edit]

I came to this page because I would like to learn the "most basic basics" of how sewing machines work. The page on sewing machines refers to this page as well as to the "lock stitch" page.

The lock stitch page has a cross-sectional drawing that shows how that stitch is applied to fabric and how the "lock" part of it works. I wish there could be a comparable drawing on this page, since I simply don't know (and still don't know after reading this page) how a basic chain stitch works or what it really even is. There are plenty of nice pictures of fancy, advanced chain stitches, but the basics seem to have been skipped over. Please don't forget the people who know next to nothing, like me. Jeans and denim[edit]

Apparently a lot of the seam stitching in jeans and similar heavy clothing is machine chainstitch rather than lockstitch. I had a quick google for suitable refs and couldn't find any (just blogs and stuff) but if anyone has good info it would make a useful addition to the article. At present it implies that chainstitch is largely obsolete in commercial clothing manufacture. --Ef80 (talk) 15:44, 15 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Chain stitching is used in lots of garment manufacturing. While it uses lots more thread than a lockstich does, thread is cheap. Labor, for stopping to change bobbins, and fill bobbins, is not.
