Comments[edit]

I have archived the talk page, there were some WP:NPAs on it and the PP is coming off tonight and I think that we should start the 3O procedure again. fr33kman t - c 00:05, 21 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Edit[edit]

Recent edit of information and references. A series of defamatory statements giving biased view of subject. Also information was inaccurate as it was based on tabloid hearsay and not established as truth. In order to maintain an unbiased and objective page for Wick I have deleted the material regarding the Moyles radio show and V festival. Text is also not consistent with the concise and fact orientated theme of the page. The word prostitute has been deleted also out of the Early Life section as this infers a sexist overtone on the page and is best kept in it's proper context in the reference supplied, for readers to read further if they want to. I do not see the great need for this word to be included on a formal biographical article and consider it disrespectful to Chanelle and her mother and adopted family.Nightfactoy (talk) 01:54, 24 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

There are multiple sources for "prostitute" for Hayes' mother, and I was unable to find any protest against it, it seems to be part of her story. She's reported as talking about it at [1]. She was four years old at the time; this reflects on her not at all; however, it's historically notable. Wikipedia is not censored. --Abd (talk) 02:59, 24 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Nightfactoy, unfortunately you seem to be constantly at odds with the other editors of this article. I can't help feeling that you have some misconceptions about how we write Wikipedia articles, and the sort of content we can and can't include. Basically, if something has been published in a reliable source (such as a mainstream newspaper, magazine or reputable website), we can write about it. Our inclusion criterion is "verifiability, not truth" (policy here). This means that, as long as readers can check that Wikipedia hasn't made something up by following citations or footnotes back to the source we used, it doesn't matter if something is true or not. It only matters that someone else wrote about it in a reliable source.
Of course, we need to be careful how we write; information should be presented in a neutral way, and anything controversial needs to be well-sourced (especially in biographical articles). The rule-of-thumb is that a reader should not be able to tell where the article author's sympathies lie. Reading the Chanelle Hayes article as it stands at the moment, it gives the impression in places that it was written by a fan. You've only ever edited Wikipedia articles about Chanelle, and I think it might be helpful in developing your editing skills if you tried contributing in other areas too - perhaps to subjects you don't feel strongly about.
To take a couple of examples from the article: the sentence "She proved a very popular housemate, both with her fellow contestants and the viewing public" is a rather sweeping statement, and in desperate need of either a citation or rewording. Also, the sentence "Chanelle became a favourite of the press in the UK" needs work. A more neutral wording might be something like "Chanelle appeared in a number of UK newspapers", with a citation or two to prove it. The content you keep removing is relevant, sourced (at least to the same standard as the rest of the article), and really does help to bring some balance. It's to your credit that you've explained why you removed it, but your explanation is based on a misunderstanding of our editing criteria, as I've mentioned above.
I do sympathise with you to some extent - articles about people like Chanelle often suffer from biased editing from those who'd like to do a demolition job on them for whatever reason, but we have to be careful that, in countering negative bias, we don't go too far the other way. If you continue removing the content, I'll have no choice but to consider applying the sanctions Wikipedia has in place to deal with disruptive editing. Perhaps, instead of simply removing it, you could suggest ways it could be better written? EyeSerenetalk 09:43, 24 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

'Occupations'[edit]

This seems a little misleading. 'Musician' - one single reaching #63 five years ago; TV presenster, etc.

Needs a tidy, I think --82.41.251.96 (talk) 20:03, 10 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

renaming her mum's occupation[edit]

Regardless of society's mores and attitudes, would it not be easier for Ms hayes and her family to describe her mother's occupation as 'Sex Worker' rather than prostitute? I realise that this may be getting a little namby-pamby, but the fact that she was murdered in her line of work deserves some dignity on our part. the term prostitute does have negative connotatations that Sex Worker does not (for some reason).82.110.109.209 (talk) 09:49, 23 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
