Modern Cheapside[edit]

I have brought this section up to date, the area is now the principal retail street of the City. It remains a principal traffic route from the West End through to the East End. 79.75.31.166 (talk) 10:11, 29 December 2008 (UTC) Tony S[reply]

The statement needs citation - you should provide evidence of the planning policies referred to, arguably including specific reference to Cheapside as a street where such developments should be encouraged. As for it being a "principal traffic route from the West End through to the East End", I'd tend to disagree. Depending on your definition of East End (most would consider that starts at Spitalfields these days) I'd argue the principal route would run either down Old Street—Clerkenwell Road—Theobalds Road or Bishopsgate—London Wall—Newgate Street—Holburn Viaduct - I doubt many cabbies would take you up (or down) Cheapside at the expense of those two options though I accept the tourist bus routes would take Cheapside—Ludgate Hill—Fleet Street. Given the article indicates Cheapside was the principal East—West thoroughfare prior to the 20th Century, arguably the contemporary Cheapside section should update the reader to indicate it is no longer the main route but just one of many. What do others think? Dick G (talk) 02:26, 30 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Knight's Tale[edit]

The use of "unsalubrious" is not entirely incorrect. While "insalubrious" may be the common antonym, I believe "unsalubrious" is also acceptable under rules of adjectival construction. Moreover "salubrious" may be used as an epithet to describe something as "wholesome" as well as "sanitary". The use is partially relevant in this context as it identifies the area as a poor, unhealthy, low-class neighbourhood. The character's roots in such an area are a key facet of the plotline and are illustrative of the area's heritage and perception throughout the ages. Perhaps a better formulation might be used (and I'll have a go at rewording) but the point is not without value. Dick G (talk) 00:14, 18 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Statue[edit]

Who is the man in the statue looking east in the 1890 photo (near where St Paul's station now is)? Is it Peel? Apparently there used to be lots of statues of him. Paulturtle (talk) 08:54, 16 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
