Untitled[edit]

Removed poorly worded Discworld reference. Surely Discworld resembles the story of Chukwa and Mahapudma and not the other way around.

Akapura[edit]

Is there a difference between Chukwa and Akupara, or are they two names for the same tortoise? Daibhid C 20:34, 2 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Are there any real sources?[edit]

Anything bigger than one-liners like this, From http://www.bartelby.net/81/16654.html : E. Cobham Brewer 1810–1897. Dictionary of Phrase and Fable. 1898. "Tortoise which Supports the Earth (The) is Chukwa; the elephant (between the tortoise and the world) is Maha-pudma." So they must have had sources for that story back in 1898... And there is a slightly more detailed mention from 1838: http://books.google.com.au/books?id=WzoMAAAAIAAJ&pg=PA250&dq=chukwa+tortoise&lr=&ei=GiHXSpaOJI7-kQSeuomgAQ#v=onepage&q=chukwa%20tortoise&f=false (The Doctrine of the Deluge: Vindicating the Scriptural Account from the Doubts which Have Recently Been Cast Upon it by Geological Speculations, by Leveson Venables Vernon-Harcourt; p. 250).
