Churchill class or still Valiant class?[edit]

According to Fontenoy's "Submarines: An Illustrated History of Their Impact" p.373, all 3 units of Churchill class - according to this article - were simply Valiant-class ships. HMS Courageous just received an updated sonar outfit and the other boats were subsequently refitted to that standard, but they were still Valliant class submarines - all five boats. --Matrek (talk) 16:56, 30 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

"Several sources fail to differentiate between the Valiant Class and these Improved Valiant Class submarines. However they are undisputedly different... There were, however, significant improvements in equipment, and machinery layout, an upgraded sonar, improvements in motor cooling that would reduce and in some cases cancel out the need for cooling water, and far better arrangements for the reduction of noise. ...the reductions in the use of cooling water and various noise forms made for a far better noise and heat signature." (Damned Un-English Machines, a history of Barrow-built submarines, page 177.)
  • Jane's Fighting Ships 1975-76, page 354 lists them as five Valiant class.
  • Jane's Fighting Ships 1988-89, page 651 lists them as two Valiant class and three Churchill class.
  • Damned Un-English Machines, a history of Barrow-built submarines, by Jack Hool and Keith Nutter, pages 169 and 177 lists them as the Valiant class and the Improved Valiant class.
