Hastings nonsense[edit]

There are a sum total of two dozen Norman knights known to have been at Hastings, none of them named Boswell. Any source that reports 'our ancestor was a commander at Hastings' is, well, not entirely fastidious with respect to historical reality. Any source that repeats such claims credulously is showing that it deserves no 'reputation for fact-checking' that underlies being a WP:RS. Agricolae (talk) 13:37, 1 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Sounds reasonable. In some cases (not looked into it here) it might be worth noting that a family claims to have had an ancestor who was at Hastings if it's relevant and is then presented with the caveat that we only have a couple of dozen names from the Normans at Hastings.
