Merge with Ballet[edit]

I'd like to merge this article with the main ballet article. Unless I hear an objection, I will do so next week. Slhogan94 19:07, 12 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I would suggest that Ballet is the article to keep, rather than Classical ballet, since Ballet is the term most people will enter/refer to. Stephenb (Talk) 09:25, 17 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Agreeing with merging[edit]

  • I believe it could definitely be merged with the main ballet article. Perhaps as its own category?
  • Absolutely this page should be merged. Despite people that might say different because of minor regional variation, Classical Ballet & Ballet are one and the same thing, they are not different styles remotely. I find it very strange that there are two seperate articles like this and suggest merging as soon as possible. As a professional ballet dancer, I can assure anyone that Ballet is Ballet and is essentially the same wherever you are in the world and whilst there are different training systems and some small variations in vocabulary of steps from nation to nation, the core technique never particularly changes. Of course it is important to point out that 'Classical Ballet' is the CORRECT term for the genre, obviously having been shortened to Ballet for common use, so eally, the content of the Ballet article should actually be moved HERE with a redirect from that page. Crazy-dancing 08:49, 17 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
    • As an addition to this comment, I realise that the earlier editor who had suggested joining the article hasn't returned for a little while and not taken action on this, so would strongly recommend that someone with experience organises this change as it is quite major. As there is little information featured that is different from the Ballet article, I suggest simply removing and reditecting. Crazy-dancing 21:45, 17 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Disagreeing with merging[edit]

  • I think it just needs something added to it. Classical ballet is a very different style of ballet. It should stay as it's own article, but it does need more history added to it. TheBallerinaDoll 00:43, 18 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Pages not merged[edit]

The Ballet and Classical Ballet pages have been edited to differentiate between the general and particularity of these. Also History of ballet now has its own article. Paul foord (talk) 12:48, 23 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Joinin[edit]

The reason I am for joinging up both the Classical Ballet and Ballet articles is that the origin are exactly the same. Classical Ballet is the historical foundation and should be the primary article on the subject. The article should feature a full history of the development of classical ballet since the renaissance and then link of to other dance forms that have developped from it such as contemporary dance, modern dance, jazz ballet or whatever. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Crazy-dancing (talkcontribs) 14:03, 11 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Error in table of training systems[edit]

The table of "widely used ballet training systems" appears to be incorrect because it shows Cecchetti method as a training system for the English ballet style. This contradicts Italian ballet, which indicates Cechetti is a training system for the Italian ballet style. I've corrected the table accordingly. Lambtron (talk) 15:50, 28 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

This is not an error, Cecchetti and his methods are central to English ballet and the development of ballet in the UK. It would actually be more correct to remove him from Italian ballet, because, although he had great influence there, the Italian ballet predates Cecchetti considerably. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 78.148.74.188 (talk) 18:59, 1 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Huh? The table has nothing to do with history or influences; it's a list of modern-day ballet styles and the training systems used to teach them. The only relevant fact is this: English ballet style is not usually taught with the Cecchetti training method. To say otherwise would conflict with several articles. I've inserted a "dubious" tag in the table to reflect this -- please don't remove it without first providing a reliable source that confirms Cecchetti training method is widely used to teach the English style of ballet. Lambtron (talk) 14:58, 2 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Oh dear, here we go again! What you refer to as "the only relevant fact", is not a fact. One teaching method does not define a national balletic style. In most cases, these characteristic styles developed from the merging of more than one method, with influence also from choreographers and specific companies and so on. What the article actually refers to is "widely used" training methods, of which there can be a number that are relevant to the aesthetic style of a national ballet. Once again we find ourselves in a situation where, in the pursuit of some imagined consistency, you are trying to force distinctions that are simply not accurate to the world of ballet in any way shape or form. And if we are going to go down that route, I suggest that the table be removed altogether. Crazy-dancing (talk) 21:39, 2 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Please be realistic; it's impossible to prove the reliability of your statement with straw man arguments. I never said that teaching methods define ballet styles, nor would I ever agree with such an obviously false premise. And of course a ballet style can be taught with different training methods; an example of this can be found in the table entries for Russian ballet. The simple fact (or problem, if you prefer) is that you stated--by virtue of your table addition--that Cecchetti training method is widely used to teach the English ballet style, but I can't find one iota of evidence, anywhere, that your statement is true. That's why I tagged it as dubious, and why the WP:BURDEN is on you to prove it's true. If you would do that, or at least provide some reasonable evidence that it's true (even if not rock-solid RS), I will gladly support removal of the tag. Hello fellow Wikipedians,

I am currently working on this page, and am planning on adding a section on the development of classical ballet from the forms of ballet (prior to classical, there was Romantic) that existed before. Part of this will include bringing in Marius Petipa, as he was a vital choreographer for some of the most well known pieces from that era (such as "The Nutcracker" and "Swan Lake"), and is sometimes referred to as the "father of classical ballet." Additionally, I plan to add a section listing some well-known examples of classical ballets and their choreographers.
