Fair use rationale for Image:CooperativeInsuranceSmall.jpg

Image:CooperativeInsuranceSmall.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Deletion of "Society" from article title

I am not sure that the edit summary justifies the move. It said: "Co-operative Insurance Society to Co-operative Insurance The name of the brand has changed. The Wikipedia entry should reflect this."

As I understand the re-branding exercise:

1. The legal name of the society hasn't changed
2. CIS now trades under 2 brands "The Co-operative Investments" and "The Co-operative Insurance"

I don't think we should be in such a hurry to change the article name to a brand which is quite generic, excludes the "Investments" brand, and (uncapitalised) could refer to hundreds of companies that offer "co-operative insurance"

The structure of the business is somewhat complicated, but in simple terms, The Co-operative Insurance Society does still exist as a legal entity, but it is used as a regulatory ringfence for the policyholder business. The bulk of the insurance business as well as the non-policyholder investment side of the business are now owned directly by the Co-operative Financial Services holding company and have nothing to do with the legal entity that is called "The Co-operative Insurance Society" or CIS. After some further thought, my suggestion would be that this and the Co-operative Bank article be merged into the Co-operative Financial Services article. Rubisco, that is not at all the case. According to their website: "CFS is the group of businesses that includes the Co-operative Insurance Society (CIS) and The Co-operative Bank including smile." As Hrothulf points out, CIS (including it's subsidiary undertakings) is simply trading as The Co-operative Insurance and The Co-operative Investments. As the article states: "All existing CIS general insurance business is now reinsured with CISGIL and CIS will in future continue to write long-term savings and insurance business only." Ok, there are two ways of presenting the structure of the Co-operative Financial Services. Either they can be presented according to the three front brands: Co-operative Bank, Co-operative Insurance and Co-operative Asset Management, or according to their legal structuring. In the latter case, CIS would only be responsible for the Life and Pensions part of the business. There is a separate legal entity named the Co-operative Insuranmce Society General Insurance (CISGIL), which incorporates the general insurance business. If the latter route is taken (structuring the articles to reflect the legal structure), then a separate article should be created for CISGIL. On 15 January 2006, CIS Ltd split its life and general insurance businesses into two separate entities and a new Industrial and Provident Society was established - CIS General Insurance Limited (CISGIL) – within which all new and renewing insurance business is now being written. All existing CIS general insurance business is now reinsured with CISGIL and CIS Ltd will in future continue to write long-term savings and insurance business only. CISGIL is a wholly owned subsidiary of CFS Ltd and a sister Company of CIS Ltd and the Co-operative Bank plc. It is authorised to carry out general insurance business by the FSA.

The third option would be to fold the material at the Co-operative Insurance and Co-operative Bank into the Co-operative Financial Services article. I'm happy to take any of these options. Thoughts? Rubisco (talk) 21:26, 20 August 2009 (UTC)

The article is incorrect in that it states that CISGIL is a subsidiary of CIS, where in fact it is owned by CFS and is a sister company to CIS.Rubisco (talk) 21:32, 20 August 2009 (UTC)
