Talk:Cobra (Zorn)

Untitled[edit]

I recently performed Cobra with some musicians who had performed it with Zorn on separate occasions, so I became interested in creating a Wikipedia article for it. I tagged some of the article unsourced because although the cues have been widely distributed and are available with the Tzadik recording, the explanations of the rules are not published. Although I was tempted to, including the cues would violate Zorn's copyright. Including the rules is problematic because there are many interpretations. I'm not sure that Zorn would want someone to learn how to play Cobra from an unsourced Wikipedia article and it could be argued that it is not appropriate for an encyclopedia, either. On the other hand, I'm willing to bet that some musicians have attempted to play Cobra with the cues but no knowledge of the rules (I almost did once). The best way is to find someone local who knows Cobra.

Note: the set of cues in the Portland Rules (external link) is reduced from the original set of 19, and the rules are different than when I performed it.

I titled the article Cobra (Zorn) in the manner of other musical compositions with ambiguous titles, for example, Symphony No. 1 (Mahler). This seems to be the convention, but also see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disambiguation#Specific_topic

THESE "PAGES" HAVE BEEN DELETED BY THE COMPOSER AS SPURIOUS AND NOT REPRESENTING THE PIECE CORRECTLY. A FULL SET OF RULES ARE NOW IN PRODUCTION AND WILL BE PUBLISHED PRIVATELY. — JOHN ZORN
