See International Phonetic Alphabet. Without an international standard (and Wikipedia is international), we cannot accurately explain through writing how to pronounce words. If we went with informal "sounds like" words, people from different places wouldn't necessarily pronounce them right. For instance, the word "oil" sounds like "earl" in some areas. That's why the IPA is preferred, although it certainly doesn't hurt to also include a layman's pronunciation. -Phoenixrod 00:22, 6 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
