Former alleged birthplace of Columbus.[edit]

In the 19th century, the Province of Genoa produced (forged) documentation naming Cogoleto as the birthplace of Christopher Columbus, based on some spurious genealogies brought before Philip II by Italian pretenders when the (Spanish) 5th Admiral of the Ocean Sea died and his (Spanish) daughter tried to inherit the title, circa 1580. All of these genealogies were dismissed by Philip, who granted the legacy of Columbus to a Portuguese aristocrat named Pedro Manuel Nuño. --76.224.64.255 (talk) 04:36, 22 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
