Appearances in the Tour de France

I think this list should indicate which direction the Galibier is ascended from. From the North (via Telegraphe) or from the South (via Lauteret). Both are difficult climbs in their own right, but the climb via Telegraphe is a different beast and widely viewed to be harder. Altitude of tunnel?

The article currently states:

Before 1976, the tunnel was the only point of passage at the top, at an altitude of 2556 m. The tunnel was closed for restoration until 2002, and a new road was constructed over the summit. The re-opened tunnel is a single lane controlled by traffic lights which, at 2400 m, is among the highest in Europe.

One of the elevation figures must be wrong.

Or did they build a completely new tunnel at a lower altitude? But then this is not explained in the text.

The French version says:

Avant 1976, le tunnel était le seul point de passage au sommet, à une altitude de 2 556 m. À cause de sa vétusté, le tunnel a été fermé en 1976. Un nouveau tracé a alors été construit, franchissant le col topographique, rajoutant sur chaque versant 1 km de route nouvelle à près de 10% de moyenne. Depuis 2002, le tunnel rénové est rouvert au trafic automobile, mais toujours interdit aux vélos qui doivent toujours franchir le vrai col et ne peuvent pas escamoter le dernier kilomètre, le plus dur de l'ascension (L'ouvrage a une longueur de 370 mètres pour une largeur de 4 mètres qui autorise seulement une circulation alternée par feux tricolores).

......which confirms that the tunnel was merely renovated and still is at an altitude of 2556m (and 370 m long and 4 m wide, and not open to bicycles).

Taking a quick look at google maps it seems that 2556 is the right measure.Link. The official website of the Tour also points out to 2556 meters: Link. Also, a photo of the tunnel (indicating the altitude) that could be added to the article: link Regards. Drunt (talk) 14:44, 20 October 2010 (UTC)
