I think the cannabis reference is just an urban myth that the internet has helped perpetuate, but I'm just going to leave it there. I think that usage goes back to The Eagles' song, Hotel California. It makes a reference to "warm smell of colitas", which some say was a reference to cannabis (which stoners tend to do a lot..). If you really think about it though, it makes no sense to pluralize it if that's the case, and I can't see any kind of logical etymology involved there. Another rumor is that it's a reference to antelope sage, but again we come back to the pluralization of the term, and the lack of any kind of clear etymology. Urban dictionary led me to several entries referencing it as hispanic slang for a tight/perky butt (a little tail). Put into context of the original song, the "warm smell of colitas" is probably a reference to the smell of females. 64.53.188.112 (talk) 10:45, 16 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
