Sources[edit]

I've added one source, which is really about all their is to be said about the article as it stands. Also, the current link to the PDF given in the article is dead, but it's a link to a .mil site, and the top result when searching for the SECNAV on Yahoo, so I'm lead to believe this is just a temporary thing. Considering the one source that was already there, as well as the one I just added, would anyone disagree with removing the Tag at the top of the page saying it cites no sources? Theater combat ribbon[edit]

In the article about Edward J. Ruppelt the above is mentioned. Is that the same as the present article? If not, does Wikipedia have an article about this merit? __meco (talk) 11:51, 3 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Approved actions list[edit]

I think this list should either be removed or moved to another article dealing with just the campaigns listed for this ribbon. The ribbon is also retroactive and I think there are dozens if not hundreds of occassions where it has been awarded. It can also be awarded on an indidivudal basis, for which no list can cover. -OberRanks (talk) 14:54, 20 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

@OberRanks: My understanding, from reading the relevant law and regs, is that the retroactive awards between 1941 & 1961 and the individual awardings are on a case-by-case basis which must be approved by the SecNav but awardings for the listed campaigns (and listed specific actions) are automatic for those involved. We are actually currently having a discussion about this at the Robert H. Barrow talk page and I welcome comment on the issue there. As for removing the list from here, I agree with Pesco's edit of 2 May 2010 doing so as well as with his reasoning that 'it was too long for an article and is in the reference'. Every award is case by case. Gen. Barrow's CARs for "combat Participation" in Korea (Navy Cross) and WWII (Bronze Star medal with Combat V) is valid. The discussion is led (by doubts of the person above) on the doubt Barrow qualifies for the CARs for Korea and WWII. Barrow, WWII, Korea, and Vietnam (CAR), retired in 1983 and died in 2008. No one is doubting Barrow's period of service, nor its quality. Follow this link:http://www.defense.gov/releases/release.aspx?releaseid=2362. It's the release from 2000 publicizing P.L. 106-65 Sec. 564 which provided for the retroactive award of the CAR. In that release, it explains what must be done for a retroactive award to be processed. There do not seem to be any reliable sources that any of the individuals, to which you have made reference, went to the trouble to apply for their retroactive awards. We find a source for those awards, we include them. An editor cannot unilaterally award subjects of Wikipedia articles additional military awards just because they think that they are entitled to them. Facts must be verifiable, in reliable sources. Barrow should be credited with 2 more CAR's he earned. The short press release of 2000 is addressed to living veterans (Navy and Marine Award Manuals gives more and further CAR details). Deceased veterans are not excluded for past CAR credit. YahwehSaves (talk) 23:22, 23 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
There are no reliable sources that state Barrow was awarded additional CAR's. On pages 8-11 and 8-12 of the Navy and Marine Corps Award Manual it states:

(2) All personnel should submit the required documentation to the appropriate address listed in Article 820 above, except Navy personnel with service from 7 December 1941 through 28 February 1961, who should submit their request to:

Chief of Naval Operations

DNS-35

2000 Navy Pentagon

Washington, DC 20350-2000

(3) In addition to the information listed above in Article 820, paragraph 5, also include a copy of Form 553 or Form DD-214/215, as applicable, and any other relevant substantiating documentation that provides evidence of personal combat action or assignment to a particular unit during the time that unit earned the Combat Action Ribbon, such as copies of combat awards, performance reports, unit muster sheets, or assignment orders.

That should make it abundantly clear that it is not an automatic process. Lacking a reliable source, there is no reason to add these additional awards based on a personal view on how a regulation is written. An individual editor's interpretation of those regulations would constitute original research. We don't do that here, we report what we find in other sources, we do not make sources. PS YahwehSaves- A bit of an aside- You point out that that only applies to living veterans in 2000. Well, he was a living veteran in 2000. Barrow died in 2008.
If you feel so strongly about Gen. Barrow needing these extra awards, then all you can do is track down his NoK (or the SecNav or CNO or whoever the third person authorised to do so was - I forget who that was) and campaign to convince one of them to apply on his behalf. Coast Guard Combat Action Ribbon[edit]

Past awards will be left alone but new awards will be presented with the Coast Guard Combat Action Ribbon. Even if someone received a similar award from a prior service before joining the Coast Guard they will be presented with the Coast Guard award. Upside down wear?[edit]

I've seen some U.S. Navy sailors wear the CAR upside down when on the right side of the uniform (such as full dress blues). I've read the uniform regulations and couldn't find anything about this. Is this just an unwritten tradition? From what I've seen, U.S. Marines don't wear them up-side down on their full dress blues. Illegitimate Barrister 23:20, 7 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Its just a mistake, James Stockdale, MOH photo, has his CAR upside down (and out of position). The CAR follows the same color preference as the PUC and Navy and Marine Corps Medal:
Feb. 1942: "Navy" PUC - Navy blue (dark blue) | gold | red
Aug. 1942: Navy and Marine Corps Medal - Navy blue (dark blue) | gold | red

ADM Jeremy Boorda- Not a CAR Recipient, If I'm Not Mistaken?[edit]

Neither his page here on wiki, nor any photographs I can find of him show him wearing the CAR.

His biography on the CNO's site further states, "Admiral Boorda's military awards included the Defense Distinguished Service Medal, the Distinguished Service Medal (three awards), the Legion of Merit (three awards), the Meritorious Service Medal (two awards) and a number of other personal and campaign awards."

Usually, the CAR is listed, not grouped in with "other personal...awards."

Does anyone know something I don't? Otherwise, I'll go ahead and remove ADM Boorda.

I'll check the history, but I'm hoping this wasn't a joke by someone, concerning ADM Boorda's "awards scandal".

Combat Action Ribbon[edit]
