Untitled[edit]

Comic book creators are not the same as cartoonists and the two articles shouldn't be merged. For one thing, this page discusses comic book writers as well as artists. For another thing, comics are often made using photos or other non-cartoon art. R.

A cartoonist and a Comic Book creator are two different jobs. People who work on comic books may not draw cartoons, just as people who draw cartoons do not make comics. --Cpryd001 06:53, 11 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

No, certainly not. The job of cartoonist encompasses an enormous range of jobs, from animation to newspaper strips. Comic books are a highly specialized niche with their own history and concepts. They should remain separate. Artemis-Arethusa 16:01, 26 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I agree. The two occupations are different. And in fact, "comic book creator" also encompasses a wide range of jobs, including writer, penciller, inker, letterer, and colorist. I feel that we have consensus to remove the merge tags. Fishal 14:20, 4 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • OPPOSE A mangaka and a comic book writer are different entities... which follow different rules of production. Thus they should not be merged. I would suggest this article be expanded and to leave the mangaka page alone. 'cause the jobs are entirely different.--Hitsuji Kinno (talk) 04:27, 25 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Neutral I'm not sure how they are different or how they do different jobs. In reality, they are the same thing except that Japanese manga authors/artists use different styles and techniques then those used by comic authors/artists in other countries. A merge is feasible as both cover the same general topic and both articles are relatively short. The one thing that I would have problem with is that a merge may result in undue weight towards Japanese manga creators. --Farix (Talk) 03:01, 28 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose While I don't believe that their jobs are "entirely" different (they are similar in many ways), the mangaka entry does have enough pertinent information to make it a informative article on its own right. Plus I agree with TheFarix that merging them will result in undue weight for the Japanese manga creators. --In Defense of the Artist (talk) 18:22, 3 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose In my opinion, Mangaka and Comic book creator are different enough to have their own article. Normally, a mangaka writes and draws, while most comic book creators do only one thing, specially in the US. True, they are similar, but most mangakas are helped by a team of assistants, something not common in Western comics to my knowledge, and are also owners of their creations, no matter where they are printed, something also uncommon in the US. Also, they're specialized in mass production, far more than Western comic book creators, something easily seen when comparing the amount of pages made for mangas and comic books. Esencially, the way their business is seen is different. As put by Frederick Schodt in "Manga! Manga! The World of Japanese Comics", in Japan, "cartoonist is a god". • Oppose Comic book creators are not mangaka, and mangaka are not really comic book creators. That's like saying that musubi and sushi are the same thing, but they're not. They are independently and inherently different. –The Obento Musubi (Contributions) 19:08, 1 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose Although it is true that mangaka's are Japanese comic book creators, I do not think that merging them into one would be a good idea. They are much too different, and I think it would create a lot of confusion. Kiiro (talk) 01:59, 3 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Weak oppose As it stands I agree that merging it would unbalance the entry. I don't have a problem returning to this when it this entry is better but my gut tells me it'd make more sense separate. (Emperor (talk) 13:18, 26 April 2008 (UTC))[reply]
