Page needs help[edit]

This page needs some help with grammar... but more importanly, it needs somebody to go through those lists. They are entirely too long and too "red." If the author isn't worthy of his/her own article on WP, then they probably don't deserve to be mentioned in a list. Lists in articles should be limited and secondary. On this article, they are about 60% of the article, and it appears as if most aren't really notable.---Balloonman PoppaBalloon 14:57, 1 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Editorial cartooning needs to be excised as well. Most of the self-publishers should go, and far more structure. And where on earth is mention of the commercial book publishers now working in Australia? Will come back with a plan. GoldFroggy (talk) 09:05, 2 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I'm thinking that excising anything not related to Comic Books might be a good start - the focus of the article is definitely on comic books/graphic novels. I'm taking out most of those lists today as well. Later I'm going to cut the "history" section down to size. GoldFroggy

  • GoldFroggy you've almost single-handedly gutted this article and made it completely useless and very misleading. Australian comics are a volatile mix of self-published comics artists and cartoonists who work across the different fields - hence the inclusion of editorial, small press and commercially published artists - they're the same people. The graphic novels of recent years are a complete anomaly and have almost nothing to do with the mainstream of Australian comics, which is what happens at the small-press and freelance level. What country are you in? I agree the list could have been edited, but as a source for Australian comics artists, with many of them Wikilinked, it was invaluable. As it stands this article is completely unrepresentative of the Australian scene.136.186.1.190 (talk) 05:33, 24 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Much of the history if not all seems straight out of Ryan's Panel which probably needs to be cited instead of all the CN notes. MartinSFSA (talk) 13:28, 24 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • There is already a list of Australian Comics Creators in the List of Comics Creators article. Perhaps you should try adding those not on that list to that article? I hadn't finished my edits, so I agree it wasn't a complete article - hence the warnings I'd added and intended to keep in place until I and others had time to write more. Perhaps you ought to look at other regional comics articles on Wikipedia. GoldFroggy (talk) 06:28, 26 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oh, and the accusation that I don't know anything about the Australian comics scene is hilarious, but not as hilarious as saying the birth of an actually successful comics industry in Australia is an "anomaly". Are you one of those Pulp Faction folks? GoldFroggy (talk) 06:36, 26 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
    • The graphic novel publishing scene will definitely be over if the Australian government removes the current protections for local publishers. It's more than likely already over, considering how many of these books already occupy the remainder bins. That said, there are artists like Shaun Tan (I'm struggling to think of any others) who will remain competitive in an international setting once the recent fad and current protections are finished.136.186.1.190 (talk) 01:56, 27 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Proposal of less ambiguous name for topic, e.g. Australian cartoons and comic strips?[edit]

Or maybe 'Comic strips & cartoons in Australia'?
To disambiguate 'comics' from meaning 'comedians'.--Tyranny Sue (talk) 00:11, 14 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Enormous list of comics creators[edit]

This needs to go - there's already a section on Australian comics creators in "List of Comic Creators". Bot is reverting me at the moment. Hmm. GoldFroggy (talk) 22:49, 18 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

  • I'm off out for the minute, but can I suggest you try weeding it. I'd suggest removing redlinked entries with no explaining text for starters, and then we can move forwards from there. Hiding T 14:01, 24 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • I think anything I try at the moment is going to be instantly reverted by the chap from ---- university, but soon I will try adding the notable figures to the List of Comics Creators article, and will later cleanup the article itself based on the Cinema of Australia article, which is both clear and shorter than this one! GoldFroggy (talk) 06:47, 26 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
    • GoldFroggy, if you're genuine about this, you're going to need to be extremely familiar with the Australian comics scene to recognise who constitutes a notable figure and in what areas - it's likely to be pretty subjective, given the nature of comics and cartoons/animation here. The list, while excessive, does at least include most names. Given that you discount the various awards (the main point of that section is that it covers the history of what has been a significant force, particularly during the Stanleys years), your task of establishing notability will be made more difficult. The main thing is not to focus on Australians working overseas (who will make the cut no matter what) - the point of Australian comics is how they work in their own country and subculture. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I figure you're new to Wikipedia, and also probably not Australian, which are both going to be disadvantages to making this entry more useful, accurate and informative. Try compressing stuff, rather than just hacking and slashing.136.186.1.190 (talk) 01:52, 27 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
