Common metre and Ballad Meter[edit]

Though these two articles have the same content, it is impotant that it is understood that common meter is the technical term, not ballad meter. Perhaps the ballad meter article could link to the common meter article. Ballad meter is really only a relevant term when used in the context of the ballad. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 152.97.221.190 (talk • contribs).

I don't know much about this topic, but this page draws a distinction between "common meter" and "ballad meter"; specifically, that common meter requires the first and third lines to rhyme, while ballad meter does not. I don't know if that's a standard distinction. (I also don't quite get why two "meter"-s would be distinguished by their rhyme scheme, but this wouldn't be the most confusing terminology I've encountered.) —Ruakh_TALK 04:33, 2 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Meter/metre[edit]

Am I mistaken, or should the article say "tetrameter" and "trimeter" instead of "tetrametre" and "trimetre"? Rom maniac (talk) 13:38, 4 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

There is a great deal of inconsistency among the various poetry and hymn meter pages over the spelling meter/metre. The standard British spelling, closer to the Norman/French roots of the word, is "metre". The standard American spelling is "meter". Does Wikipedia have a policy on the use of British vs. American English? My own preference is for the American spelling. Any thoughts among the poetry or musical community? No Clean-Up Needed[edit]

The Examples section is flagged with a clean-up header, saying the section contains poorly defined embedded lists. Whoever placed it there is mistaken. The section contains examples of poetry, broken into clearly defined and identifiable stanzas. I'll give other editors a chance to review the section, after which time, if no one else has, I will take it upon myself to remove the erroneous and unnecessary—and misleading—notice. rowley (talk) 07:37, 19 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
