Structure[edit]

Hey Gia and Dee, Here is the thread for discussing structure. Sstandefer10 (talk) 20:54, 25 April 2022 (UTC)Sarah[reply]

After reviewing the page, I don't see issues with the structure. I think the "People involved" section could have a cleaner title. I also think we could add other countries to the "Laws and Policies" section. Let me know your thoughts. Sstandefer10 (talk) 21:06, 25 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

https://www.icomos.org/charters/venice_e.pdf
Just found this publication from ICOMOS that is an incredible resource! It is the "INTERNATIONAL CHARTER FOR THE CONSERVATION AND RESTORATION OF MONUMENTS AND SITES (THE VENICE CHARTER 1964)." It includes all the information on how sites should be managed. DoArte17 (talk) 00:26, 27 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
The section specifically about "Visitors" seems a little odd. It's written like an instructional guide and the example it gives, while presents an issue with visitors intervention on archaeological sites, is kind of an outrageous story. I would reformat this with perhaps a reference to an actual archaeological sites publication on visitor suggestions. The shift should be away from seemingly demonizing visitors to a more neutral perspective. DoArte17 (talk) 01:05, 27 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I also think the intro could be reworked and reworded. Perhaps the addition of a reference would benefit here. See reference idea in next section. Sstandefer10 (talk) 19:02, 26 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Sarah and Dee,
I agree that "people involved" can be reworked. Possibly even into more sections? Like describe the role of archeologists and conservators in one and the impact of/on visitors in another? I just feel like they fit weirdly together in the current section. Just a suggestion.
Also we should definitely add other countries in the "Laws and Policies" section, especially ones where archaeology takes place often such as Egypt and Greece for sure. GigiJhu (talk) 02:18, 27 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Another idea: In the restoration/renovation section, we could mention Knossos as it is a major example of the issues that can arise with this. We can also include a picture. I have mentioned this a few times in our discussions and think it would be great to include. See reference idea in next section. Sstandefer10 (talk) 19:11, 26 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

In the Dangers section, I think we should add a paragraph about looting. It is a major threat to sites and it is not mentioned here. There is a wiki page for archaeological looting, so we can link that in the paragraph. Sstandefer10 (talk) 19:26, 26 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Group!
Sarah, this all looks great! I think the structure is fine, as well. The "People Involved" section definitely needs a new heading. It could maybe just be titled "People" or "Human Involvement." We could give a brief introduction underneath the heading to include a brief account of the effects of humans on archaeological sites and their responsibility to protect them.
The Law and Policy section is a good idea, but maybe we can try to find information from ICOMOS (International Council on Monuments and Sites). I imagine they would probably have good information for international sites. Or we can try UNESCO. I'll look into those particular organizations to try and source information.
I think it is a GREAT idea to use Knossos as an example! I went there in 2018 and it's really powerful to see, but of course it is not without its conservation issues, of course!
Looting should absolutely be added to the dangers section. I think it would be a good idea to compile all of our agents of deterioration posts and see if we can work that information into the article, as well! DoArte17 (talk) 00:22, 27 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I also think we should add at least a few more bits of information or an example or two for each of the "techniques", only because they outline exactly what's done during the conservation of archeological sites, and the more specific we get, the better for the sake of those who don't know much about the process. What do you guys think?GigiJhu (talk) 02:33, 27 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

      • Note that "Recreation/Restoration" needs to be changed to "Re-creation/Restoration". Recreation in this form means activity. DoArte17 (talk) 17:40, 27 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hey guys, I found this book really helpful during our time in class and could add helpful citations: Sullivan, S., & Mackay, R. (2013). Archaeological sites: Conservation and management. The Getty Conservation Institute. I am going to check all of the citations to make sure none of the links are broken. Sstandefer10 (talk) 21:02, 25 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Here is a reference that could be added cited and added to the intro. http://www.getty.edu/conservation/publications_resources/newsletters/33_1/feature.html Sstandefer10 (talk) 19:04, 26 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Here is a reference if we choose to mention Knossos: https://smarthistory.org/conservation-knossos/Sstandefer10 (talk) 19:12, 26 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I have found 2 sources that cover laws and policies in the EU and Asia/The Pacific. I will add them to the outline. Sstandefer10 (talk) 19:28, 26 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I have yet to go through this book that someone suggested to me in class, but it focuses on the Mediterranean region. I hope there's something about laws in it, it's in my list of class references in the outline.https://www.iccrom.org/publication/conservation-archaeological-excavations-particular-reference-mediterranean-area GigiJhu (talk) 02:23, 27 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
