Definition[edit]

I'm not satisfied with the definition as it stands:

Co-operation or co-operative behaviours are terms used to describe behaviours by biological organisms which a beneficial to other members of the same species.

How about something like:

Co-operation or co-operative behaviours are terms used to describe behaviours of biological entities (from genes to societies) which are mutually beneficial to the evolutionary success of each entity involved.

I'm not sure if this article intends to deal with all levels, including individual genes. I presume it means only to deal with cooperation that is advantageous in terms of survival, but again I can't be certain. I'll leave it for other authors to decide. Merge from[edit]

I think the other page, Evolution of cooperation, should be used as the base for the merger - since it has more information pre-organized. I suggested a merge to THIS page, however, since this page name seems more concise and appropriate.-Tesseract2 (talk) 19:16, 1 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

"The Evolution of Cooperation" is a specific book title (on which the original article was based) and a specific journal article, which together are notable for pretty much defining and popularizing a specific field; this term really should be maintained. I consider the title here ("Co-operation (evolution)") unsatisfactory on two points: 1) "co-operation" is a variant term (more properly "cooperation"), and 2) suggests a subdivision of a subject which (on Wikipedia) is not yet treated sufficiently to warrant subdivision. Mu suggestion is that this article be redirected to "The Evolution of Cooperation". - J. Johnson (JJ) (talk) 23:32, 3 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I think there should be a merger. I don't really like the title of this page, but I'm fine with maintaining it to separate the book title from the general idea. As I proposed on the talk page of The Evolution of Cooperation, I plan to simplify that page to be focused more narrowly on the book and article and then merge the more general information with this page. A link from that page to this one should suffice for people who want the general idea or more details on the larger impact of the ideas popularized by the book but further developed by other scholars. The section "Evolutionary mechanisms suggesting that reciprocity is the result, not the cause, of the evolution of cooperation" is not really clear and does not look like it fits wikipedia guidelines[edit]

Hi,

I just read this article on co-operation and I find the section "Evolutionary mechanisms suggesting that reciprocity is the result, not the cause, of the evolution of cooperation" rather weird. The wording is rather complicated, it does not go straight to the point. Seems to me that the point suggested here is a mixture of the "green beard" gene hypothesis and of honest signaling hypothesis, but I don't know if, phrased like that, it should be on wikipedia. I think that the title of the section is also way too long and unclear.

What are your opinions on that?

Thank you for your help. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Pecoffet (talkcontribs) 13:15, 11 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
