To not merge on the grounds of independent notability and stale proposal (not discussed over the last 3 years)

I've converted "Cooperative extension service" to a redirect to this page, as we don't need two on the same topic. Interestingly, both sites would seem to have been written by the same user, as they share a lot of writing and sources in common. 24.20.201.140 (talk) 22:25, 15 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

With regard to the merge proposal, the Alaska Cooperative Extension Service page may have some content worth salvaging, but many of the page's sources are not reliable e.g. all of the Facebook and UAF pages, and the community perspective news piece written by UAF people. Someone went through considerable effort to place a lot of bad sources into that article, and it's going to take some vetting to determine what's worth keeping, if anything. 24.20.201.140 (talk) 00:16, 16 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Oppose merge I haven't been all that impressed with a lot of what's come out of Articles for Creation. While I do see lots of garbage sources in this article, there are also plenty of usable sources as well. There are additionally plenty of non-web-based sources in existence which can be incorporated into the article.
As to the merge proposal itself: the entity described in this article appears to be of fairly recent creation, an umbrella of sorts for state extension services who likely enjoy significant histories of their own. That certainly is the case with Alaska CES. For a number of years, CES *was* the University of Alaska in the eyes of many "average folk", particularly when UA was more the equivalent of an A&M university than today's full-service institution.
The history of the University of Alaska is a topic which could warrant its own article. If it's deemed that Alaska CES is not worthy of its own article, that would make for a more logical target than this article. Of course, there is an obvious problem there, in that someone would have to write that article first. RadioKAOS  – Talk to me, Billy 07:54, 16 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Oppose merge, request for feedback: As the original submitter of the Alaska CES article, I'm confused as to why you think the majority of the sources are "garbage." I realize that some of them are UAF sponsored, but they are meant to be examples that back up assertions. After statements that CES offers certain classes, or that CES outreach efforts have changed over time to include web communities, I provided links to examples as proof. I think that's a separate issue from links that substantiate the "newsworthiness" of the article, and that is where links to historical documents and newspaper articles come in. I agree it could use more. The problem is, many historical books are not web-based, and it was my understanding that web-based sources were preferred for Wikipedia citations. This was my first attempt at a Wikipedia article, so I clearly need some help understanding what the community will accept as a "good" source. I strongly oppose a merge- the information in the article about Alaska CES is specific to the history of the state, not to CREES in general, which was renamed the National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA). NIFA appears as its own Wikipedia entry[1]. Alaska's is also not the only state-level article on Cooperative Extension history that exists. Alabama Extension[2] and Georgia 4-H[3] had pages before Alaska did, so it doesn't make sense to propose merging this article with an article on CREES/NIFA, when the precedent has been established for stand-alone articles on state land grant efforts. There is already a Wikipedia article on the University of Alaska Fairbanks which notes its land-grant status and has a history section started. If enough folks agree the information on Alaska CES doesn't work as a stand-alone, I think it makes more sense to propose a merge with the article on UAF[4]. Garbage may be a harsh word. Let's just say that we need reliable sources. Sources need not be web-based, to my knowledge, but they do need to be reliable. The fact that there are pages on other states' Extension programs does not justify, on its own, the existence of another. Other stuff exists, two wrongs don't make a right, etc. In any event, thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. I oppose the merge as well. The Cooperative Extension system programs are as much a state and local initiative as one of the Federal government. Putting them under the now defunct Cooperative State Research and Extension Service is a bad idea, and not really representative of the breadth of the effort.
