Untitled[edit]

Though I have never been in Australia I see two things to criticize in this article:

  • It is too specific for an encyclopedia article — do we post the routes serving each transit station in the world?
  • The areas served by bus routes are often changed, thus maintenance of the article becomes too tedious for an encyclopedia. Too Old 04:57, 21 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

A frw things to note:

  • There is ample precedent to post route information e.g. Category:London bus routes and Category:Tram routes in Melbourne etc, which are far more specific and also subject to change (albeit less for tram routes, but Melbourne's network is sufficiently large and complex for actual routes to change). More on point - List of Perth bus stations. This is also a useful resource, far more so than the official site as a quick reference. It is also better than the printed timetable as the routes are for some reason in no particular order and sometimes replicated.
  • Changes are not frequent in this part of Brisbane, and any changes are a) published well in advance by TransLink and/or b) uploaded into the template which I have just put into the page, or the template for a certain route is added/removed. Not tedious at all once the initial groundwork is laid.
  • I and several other enthusiasts do maintain the pages - we do not tolerate out of date information and correct it in advance of changes, as we use it ourselves.
  • The same information in other contexts has survived several vfd attempts.

Thank you for your commments. SM247 01:27, 27 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • I live in the USA State of Washington, which has an extensive ferry system, Washington State Ferries, the largest in the USA and third largest in the world. The system maintains a website which has extensive information on fares, schedules, service, plans, etc. There also many other publicly and privately opperated ferries in Washington State, British Columbia and Alaska, some of which connect with the Washington State Ferries. This huge system has many connections with rail, bus, and highway systems, but these many, many links are not included in the Wikipedia article. Nor would I wish to maintain such an information source. It is all available on the internet anyway. Similarly, I am a native of New York City, and that city's "subway" system also is covered in a Wikipedia article, but the many bus, rail, and highway connections are not. The Metropolitan Transit Authority maintains a web site that covers the subject far better than any amateur could.
  • This leads me to related subject: The tendency for every currently performing musician, singer, etc. to be covered in a Wikipedia article, though many people of far greater talent are ignored, because they died more than 25 years ago. Not every person who ever lived or is now living deserves an article. Talented teachers are at least as important as bass players, but seldom deserve an article; why does every bass player?
  • Wikipedia should try to include the significant, not the petty. Too Old 22:38, 27 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

With respect, the validity of having individual train stations and connecting route information is established as stations are geographical locations of significance and the drain on Wikipedia's resources is minimal - in this case, two connecting routes. I don't know if you tried to use TransLink's site or have access to a hardcopy CityTrain timetable, but if you did you would see that this is a better resource for locating connecting services at a glance than that which is made available (something I have pointed out to TransLink repeatedly). The best way is to look e.g. at Cleveland railway line, Brisbane, check the list of routes and go to the station page for details, then find the appropriate PDF on the TransLink site. You can't trust the journey planner as far as you can throw it (having an entirely ethereal existence, this isn't far).

It isn't my problem if such information is not included for other parts of the world. Articles are created as people get to them. This page isn't going anywhere - indeed all CityTrain articles will receive a proper infobox, photos and better information in future.

Pages for stations such as Brisbane Central, Sydney Terminal or Southern Cross are logically going to have more information and be better written because they are more important stations.

I also refer you to such pages as List of New York City Subway services, MTA New York City Transit buses and Bee-Line Bus System which are clearly established. These are hardly the only such pages. SM247 06:45, 28 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
