Plagiarism[edit]

I changed the opening part of the Plot section because it clearly was infringing on a review written by Philip Pullman, the author of the His Dark Materials series of books. The name "Coraline"[edit]

What does the name "Coraline" mean? It seems to be an alteration from Caroline.--80.141.228.235 (talk) 21:04, 17 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Gaiman seems to have changed the position of the "o" and the "a" in the name "Caroline" to create the name. I don't think the name means anything on its own. Abootface (talk) 18:43, 18 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
In all likelihood, he was poking a bit of fun at parents who insist on coming up with "unique" names and/or spellings of existing names for their children, despite the trouble it causes the child. Heh, maybe it's just because I'm taking a class on marine ecology this semester, but I didn't even think of that. What I thought of was that it meant Coral-like, in the sense of coralline algae (even though that has two L's and her name has one). Yes, it's really Mr. Bobo[edit]

On the faint hope that editors read this (or the section on the character Mr. Bobo which notes the name change for the movie), I want to make this clear: In the book, the character's name is Mr. Bobo, not Mr. Bobinski. Connection to "La Belle Dame Sans Merci" by Keats[edit]

I wish Gaiman would give an interview and mention Keats poem in connection with Coraline. The stories are far to similar to be coincidental, especially the scenes where the knight and Coraline encounter the witch previous victims.

It seems to be a sort of chicken and egg problem. The word beldam is older than Keats poem. But why would Keats give an english poem a french title, unless of course he was leaving a clever exercise for the reader.

Nameless parents[edit]

Wybie[edit]

The Plot Summary mentions the "Other" of a character named Wybie, whom I had never heard of before. Apparently, he was an added character in the movie, so as Coraline would have someone to talk to. However, this page is about Coraline the book, and should have a plot summary reflecting this. I will try to edit the plot summary when i get a copy of the book, as the plots for the film adaptation and the book should be distinct and not jumbled incoherently on each others' pages. Plot Summary Spellings[edit]

As this is a book written by a British author, I think the follow two spellings should be changed "neighbors" to "neighbours", and "realizes" to "realises". Pity Wikipedia can't auto-correct based on reader's language. Taliska (talk) 07:21, 15 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

So i found out that on a recent tumblr post, Neil Gaiman responded to a user asking them if the two characters are in a relationship and he confirmed it.
