1543 origin?[edit]

As far as I know Westmeath was created in November 1542. What's the source of the 1543 origin? 86.42.76.166 21:28, 25 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The Act was passed in the regnal year 34 Hen. 8, i.e. 22 Apr. 1542 - 21 Apr. 1543, so if it was enacted at a date in November it would certainly have been in 1542. It's called the "Counties of Meath and Westmeath Act 1543", though, in the Statute Law Revision Act 2007 of the Oireachtas. Could it be that it's the convention, when "converting" regnal years into calendar years to use the last date of the calendar year (hence the 1543)? If you've a source for the November date, that would settle it as 1542. -- Picapica (talk) 19:09, 29 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Bovine cows[edit]

From the section on Westmeath cattle: Breeds of bovine cows have become more commercial than older breeds.

I may be missing something here, but aren't "bovine cows" as tautological as equine horses, feline cats, canine dogs, and porcine pigs? I could guess that the quoted sentence is perhaps trying to say that there is now more money in beef herds than in dairy -- but the author's making it very hard work for the reader!

I also wonder, by the way, whether all the stock-breeding and horse-raising information currently in the article (as well as being in need of a fair bit of attention spelling-, punctuation-, and sentence-construction-wise) wouldn't be better placed in a separate article on Westmeath animal husbandry. -- Picapica (talk) 19:29, 29 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Agree! But the "we own Westmeath" folk seem to be devout ruralists. The have removed photos of boating on the Shannon in Athlone (not mine btw) as "irrelevant" and don't like "mainstream" shots and obviously think bovines are still Westmeath's main source of wealth; which I doubt! Pictures of Baronston and Shinglas?[edit]

Hi,

I'm working on the biographical article about the great 18th-century Shakespearean scholar Edmond Malone—in my world, one of the more famous and significant people from Westmeath—and have been having trouble finding any pictures of the two Malone ancestral estates: Baronston, originally his grandfather, Anthony Malone's (M.P. and Chancellor of the Exchequer), estate, which eventually fell to Richard, Baron Sunderlin (Edmond's brother); and Shinglas the Malone country house that Edmond inherited after his father' (also Edmond Malone, M.P. and Judge of the Court of Common Pleas in Ireland) death in 1774. Google reveals little about these, so I have no better coordinates than “in County Westmeath”. If any Wikipedians in or around Westmeath should be inclined to help, it would be much appreciated.

PS. I am, incidentally, also interested in Edmond Malone's familiy, and would like to eventually write short articles on them as well. If anyone should happen to have good ideas for sources to use—above the simple genealogies listing names and dates—I would very much appreciate tips. I'm guessing there may be local histories on Westmeath or on the Irish government or law (the Malones were at one point almost all practicing law in Westmeath, Edmond and his father on the Munster Circuit). --Xover (talk) 11:29, 7 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

See Annals of Westmeath Ancient and Modern by James Woods, 1907, page 304 for a picture of Baronston. Just now working on Shinglas myself. Also have general information on Malone family history which includes references to source documents (draft form). Contact via email for file. NiMhaoileoin (talk) 03:53, 19 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Just for future reference, I stumbled across http://www.araltas.com/features/malone/ which claims Baronston was demolished in 1929. --Xover (talk) 06:20, 20 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

My family own the area of Shinglas estate where the house once stood, however the house was knocked prior to my family purchasing the lands. If you had any look in finding a picture of the house I would like to see a copy. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 109.75.65.11 (talk) 22:09, 21 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
