Removal of inaccurate information[edit]

I removed the following passage from the article as it is not accurate:

Jeyaretnam had originally been convicted of contempt of court for the "scandalous" allegation that the Chief Justice was "beholden" to then-prime minister Lee Kuan Yew [ref: http://asiasentinel.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=1432&Itemid=31], and in subsequent lawsuits he was denied permission to appeal to the Privy Council [ref: http://www.economist.com/node/12376738?story_id=12376738].

Jeyaretnam was never convicted of contempt of court, and the reference from the Asia Sentinel does not say so either (that article is about contempt of court proceedings brought against Dow Jones). He was, however, penalized for contempt of Parliament for making the alleged statement: see "Parliament of Singapore#Powers with regard to MPs". Furthermore, he was not "denied permission to appeal to the Privy Council" in subsequent lawsuits, and the Economist article does not say so. Jeyaretnam was unable to appeal his conviction for cheque fraud and making a false declaration beyond the High Court because the case was a Subordinate Court matter. Criminal cases originating in the Subordinate Courts can only be appealed to the High Court, and no further, not even to the Court of Appeal (though if there is a question of law that may be referred to the Court of Appeal for its consideration): see "Court of Appeal#Criminal appeals". In any case, the above passage is not directly germane to the content of the article's "History" section. — Cheers, JackLee talk 08:14, 31 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
