Coves and inlets[edit]

Would a brief sentence explaining the topographical similarities/differences between land coves and coves along bodies of water be appropriate, or is that a Wiktionary thing? The two types of coves have the same etymology. Bms4880 (talk) 21:58, 25 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

My impression (see http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/cove for the sources of this impression) is that the two meanings have the same ancestor (that is, a word or words meaning "cave", "closet", "sheltered nook," or "small chamber"), but they evolved separately from that ancestral word. If that impression is correct (I need to check the print copy of the OED), there is no etymological justification for comparing the meanings of the two terms. An ideal place to discuss the etymology might be Cove (disambiguation), but I believe that is contrary to Wikipedia policy on disambiguation pages. I don't know much about Wiktionary, but it appears to me that http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/cove is the right place for the discussion. --Orlady (talk) 02:04, 26 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
