Highest Sea Cliffs in Europe[edit]

Can someone please find out the actual "highest sea cliffs in Europe", Croaghaun keeps jumping between 1st to 3rd. It is confusing how Hornelen is said to be the highest with a vertical drop of 860m but prominence of 115m. And Cape Enniberg is said to be 754m above sea level, then of course you get sea cliffs between the low 600's and the high 400's claiming to be the world's highest!. Someone needs to sort this out --Ire2500 (talk) 20:24, 15 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I will work on this. Part of the issue is that there are different standards by which some of this stuff is being measured--how the cliff drops, where it starts, the slope, etc. Erikeltic (Talk) 02:20, 16 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Ire 2500, Croaghaun, at 664 metres are the secong highest in Europe. Hornelen, due to its glacial formation and fjord location cannot be classified in the same category as an eroded sea cliff. The highest marine cliff in Europe under the above conditions is Cape Enniberg on Faroe islands, thats crystal clear, at 754 metres. Slieve league in Donegal claimed the highets cliff accolade for years (601 metres) but with access to various maps and data on the internet, this has changes. They are the fifth highest, hope this helps — Preceding unsigned comment added by Niallo301 (talkcontribs) 23:06, 8 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Your citation(s) do not match the material you are attempting to add. In addition, it's wholly irrelevant to add information about Croaghaun to the article about Slieve League. Finally, when discussing sheer cliffs on Ireland--Croaghaun doesn't qualify in either category. Please stop the disruptive editing. Erikeltic (Talk) 00:36, 9 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

How do you define sheer? A perfect 90 degreed angle cliff does not exist. A cliff is defined as 'A high, steep, or overhanging face of rock', (dictionary.com) Standards are not strict and defined because geology unfortunately is not designed so perfectly that we can measure a 'perfect cliff'. Marine cliffs originate from hills and mountains that are eroded away by the force of the sea. Therefore the high point of the cliff is the high point of the mountain. It is very simple, all you need is a map. This is not disruptive, it is very clarifying — Preceding unsigned comment added by Niallo301 (talkcontribs) 20:21, 9 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
