Who knows! The story of "xenophobic vandals" stealing it during the 1962 missile crisis and dumping it in Rock Creek Park is the story I want to believe :) The other story is a construction crew removed it to storage where it was "lost" in a warehouse ala Indian Jones. But both seem plausible. If the second story is true, one wonders how and why the vandal story came about. If the first story is true, the second story would make sense as a cover of sorts .. which adds to the mystery. Anyway, interesting article. Green Cardamom (talk) 17:04, 25 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
