Notability and sources

This man has seen press coverage in the English language, as well as a great deal in Chinese. English: China Digital Times, china.org.cn, San Diego Union Tribune, China Daily. Google turns up around 200 unique hits [1], but his name in Chinese characters has thousands [2]. This covers the need for sources, and confirms his notability. Thanks, but I'm still concerned that as yet we have no reliable sources, in a reasonably verifiable form, for any aspect of this man's existence, nor yet any reason to believe the article to be encyclopedia. Are there any article about him, for instance, in any mainstream Chinese, American, Singaporean, Australian, New Zealand, or European daily newspaper, in a European language? Based on the Google search alone, it is obvious that this man is well-known in the Chinese-speaking world. Let's not succumb to systematic bias just because we cannot read Chinese. Also, the link to the San Diego newspaper is a Reuters article; if that's not a dependable source, I'm not sure what is. It specifically says, "Cui's plight sparked a nationwide outpouring of sympathy and a heated debate on the need to protect the basic rights of disadvantaged groups." Even the China Daily (the Communist party-controlled state newspaper) notes that professors were saying that Cui should not get a death sentence [3]. Cui's case is obviously being discussed widely. Conflict with other people of that name

It does not make sense why CUI YINGJIE was added to Wkipedia. There are thousands named "Cui Yingjie" in China. Cui Yingjie is a typical korean name who reside in north-east China, while more and more ethnic Han-Chinese from Henan and Hebei province use this name. Apparently, the inclusion of Cui Yingjie in Wiki will cause conflict of interest and damages reputation of other persons named Cui Yingjie. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.239.15.1 (talk • contribs)

That is indeed unfortunate. I see that "崔" ranks 54th of Chinese family names, and "英杰" looks like a popular personal name to me, so it is plausible that there are many people of that name. I am aware that that must cause pain to bearers of that name and their friends.

So, what to do about this? Speedy deletion is not a solution, that has to follow strict criteria, none of which comes even close. (This is why I reverted your edits to the article and talk page.) The official, and fastest way is described on Wikipedia:Articles for deletion. That takes one week. However, given the above discussion, it is not very likely that the request will be approved. Wikipedia describes what is, not what should be. Currently, when you google for "崔英杰", you will see that by far most mentions of this name are for the person described in the article. Even when you exclude the city administrator, as in this search, the first results will be either about this person, or on some blogs or other pages that are not from reliable sources. So, we may want to think of other solutions. If you have a reliable source for the popularity of the name, we could write a disclaimer in a box on top of this article. I haven't seen this done on any other article, but if nobody objects then it seems like a good compromise to me. — Sebastian 04:53, 13 September 2009 (UTC)
