Merge proposal[edit]

In my opinion, the information - scant as it is - should be merged into the larger article cupellation about the process, and searches for cupel redirected there. NReitzel (talk) 16:01, 2 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

  • Support -- I had not found that article, but do not think we need it as a separate one. Merging it (but leaving a redirect) is a good solution. However, it should probably also be trasnwikified to the dictionary (if not already there). My recollection is of references to "bone ash cupels". Can you tell me where to buy Cupellation crucibles? Thank you, Paul Fresco 2600:1700:6943:A000:301D:CF14:45CC:6140 (talk) 06:39, 5 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Edit proposal[edit]

Cupellation is the second component of fire-assaying whereby a lead 'button' is placed into a cupel made from bone ash or magnesium oxide (MgO) and then undergoes an oxidising fusion. The lead button is molten and oxidised to form lead oxide (PbO) which is absorbed by the cupel, leaving a bead containing silver and any gold and precious metals. During cupellation silver collects gold and the platinum group elements. With ham (talk) 02:43, 1 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

If this is proposed to be substituted for the present text, the word litharge ahould appear. Peterkingiron (talk) 21:58, 1 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed, however I am not suggesting that the present text be substituted rather than simply edited. With ham (talk) 00:28, 6 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Link to Alchemy[edit]

I'm not quite sure why this page is linked with Alchemy if the page makes zero mention of its history as a process in alchemy. 108.54.168.177 (talk) 05:44, 30 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
