Namesake[edit]

Regarding Charles Curlin, the namesake for the horse, per USA Today/Associated Press March 13, 2007he fought for the Confederacy.

Charles Curlin was a slave who fought - he's from western Kentucky - he fought in the Civil War on the side of the rebels," Gallion said. "One of my partners - a co-partner with Midnight Cry Stables, is his great, great grandson. "He named this horse after his great, great grandfather who was a freed slave, fought for the rebels - and now he's won the Rebel Stakes."

Civil War military records conflict with his quote. In the Report of the Adjutant General of the State of Kentucky, (Harney, 1866) Charles Curlin was listed as a Private in Company A of the 13th United States Colored Heavy Artillery. Ownership[edit]

Any further attempts to sanitize the status of Curlin's owners - Gallion and Cunningham Jr - will result in the seeking of removal of said user's rights to edit wikipedia and be considered vandalism. Have an issue with that? Direct it with me. --Kellsboro Jack 04:13, 30 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • I just reverted a change that someone had made deleting all of the references to the owners. Since for whatever reason this article seems to be targeted by folks looking to "clear" any references to the Curlin ownership dispute regarding Cunningham and Gallion(Keycap 15:38, 12 November 2007 (UTC)).[reply]

        • Someone really seems to have an agenda regarding this Curlin article and is trying to change the wording regarding the 20% being turned over to the fen-phen clients... the way it reads now, "On November 1, 2007 Boone County, Kentucky, Judge William Wehr ruled the 20% interest in the colt owned by Gallion and Cunningham Jr. would be turned over to the more than 400 persons involved in a lawsuit over the diet drug fen-phen" is correct and is cited appropriately. Billyates27 writes - because that is what the judge ordered - I have read the order - it is also what the Blood Horse and every other major Thoroughbred publication is reporting - try next time checking the facts instead of publishing inaccurate statements given by the plaintiffs attorney - that is why it NEEDS to be changed - so that it reflects the TRUTH! —Preceding unsigned comment added by Bill yates27 (talk • contribs) 01:58, 28 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Please provide another citation then. The lede from the Blood-Horse article I cite reads: "The ongoing saga of Curlin continued in a courtroom in Kentucky Nov. 1 when a judge ruled the 20% interest in the colt owned by the two original owners would be turned over to the more than 400 persons involved in a lawsuit over the diet drug fen-phen."[1](Keycap (talk) 04:42, 28 November 2007 (UTC)).[reply]

Race Career[edit]

The info provided in his race career isn't consistent. Sometimes there are final times and Beyer numbers and sometimes there aren't. One race even gives his show payout... huh? Do these things belong, since someone can find them by easiliy looking on a DRF or Equibase PP? I started to edit it, but wasn't sure what to add and take away and decided to ask here first. Someone really needs to devote more time to it depending on what needs to be changed...

Wikipedia uses the information that is available and that can be used to help an article, and does not take that information away if it is not uniform throughout the article. Various Thoughts[edit]

There has been some edit-warring on this article and I am as guilty of it as the next person. However, my reversal of edits has been to help this article abide by Wikipedia policies. We can make this article reach good article status, but we cannot do that by edit warring. Here are my various thoughts about this:

  • Please stop mentioning that the Breeders' Cup Classic was the race for Horse of the Year or that Curlin will be Horse of the Year. Wikipedia is not a place for speculation. The Eclipse Awards are not announced until the end of January - they haven't even announced the finalists yet.
  • Words like "amazing", "astonishing" and so forth are considered "peacock" terms and are not keeping with Wikipedia style. In addition, they violate the neutral point of view policy.
  • The removal of referenced, relevant ownership information is referenced and abides by WP:BLP. Changing a sentence to mean something entirely different than what is referenced violates WP:BLP. Changing the sentence to something untrue is vandalism.
  • Virtually everything on Curlin can be referenced. He didn't come into the spotlight until earlier this year...all of the news stories related to him will still be online. If something is going to be added, please make sure it is referenced.
  • We can make this article into a good article...or even a featured article. But we need to cooperate. If you are trying to push an agenda that does not further Wikipedia and the status of this article, Wikipedia is not the place for you. Let's work together and make this the best article it can be, but please, please, abide by common sense and Wikipedia guidelines. --SmashvilleBONK! 19:11, 27 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

-- Agreed, for the most part the "edit war" appears to me be vandalism or "sanitizing" or edits by those who are ignorant of wiki style, etc. It doesn't appear to be a back and forth by two or more editors in good faith.

Moving Forward- sections[edit]

Looking at how he can move this article up. I think that there are too many sub-headings and very short paragraphs. It does make it easy to locate information, but it also makes the article seem scrappy and disjointed. If this was an article on a European horse I'd try editing, but I'm no expert on US racing and I might end up missing something important.

The other improvement is in the tone of the language. If you look at the section on the Preakness, we have "fiercely rallying", "sneak", "thrilling", "furious charge". These are words that we all hear and read regularly in racing articles, but they aren't right for a the main text of a general encyclopedia. The same goes for that old favourite "stretch duel".

I really like this article and there's more than enough quality content here for a B class.
