NGC identification[edit]

The Sinbad location for NGC 6960 (and the labels on all the star atlases, including Uranometria) correspond to the Western Veil Nebula -- but the article (before I edited it) treated NGC 6960 as a designation for the entire loop. Is this a case of the 1st number in R.A. being applied to the whole? Is there a clear reference for that? -- Elphion (talk) 15:49, 24 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

center mis-positioned?[edit]

The actual center of the CL SNR, corresponding to the coordinates of "Cygnus X-5" listed in the article, is about one finger-width straight to the left, on the annotated UV image thumbnail, viewable whilst reading. Cp.

onto which image, the coordinates for "Cygnus X-5" can be plotted. Cygnus X-5 corresponds to a bright Lyman-α region, near the center of the SNR, as seen in the following figure:

http://phys.org/news/2012-12-largest-astronomical-images.html

Seemingly the same region is bright in UV as well; and, evidently, x-rays too. Perhaps a professional could improve the article, by double-checking the position labeled "approximate center" on the Wikipedia article UV image? 66.235.38.214 (talk) 04:24, 27 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The position marked in the image is the position given in the article: The center of the supernova shell as determined from X-ray data lies at J1950 RA 20h 49m 45s Dec +30° 53′.[1]
If this position is not correct, the article should be changed, and I would be happy to update the image. (The reference, after all, is somewhat dated.) Otherwise, it would be useful to indicate in the article why the center of the shell and the position of X-5 don't coincide. -- Elphion (talk) 14:14, 27 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hello! This is a note to let the editors of this article know that File:Ultraviolet image of the Cygnus Loop Nebula crop.jpg will be appearing as picture of the day on May 6, 2018. You can view and edit the POTD blurb at Template:POTD/2018-05-06. If this article needs any attention or maintenance, it would be preferable if that could be done before its appearance on the Main Page. — Chris Woodrich (talk) 10:00, 25 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Cygnus Loop
An ultraviolet image of the Cygnus Loop, a large supernova remnant in the constellation Cygnus. Different parts of the loop emit electromagnetic radiation in different ranges, including visible light for the arcs known collectively as the Veil Nebula. The complete loop is only revealed through radio, infrared, and X-ray images.Photograph: NASA/JPL-Caltech

The Cygnus Loop is generally imaged in HOO, attached a 48.2 million pixel mosaic image (that i have taken personally) in said imaging/processing method. My connection is rather weak and i cannot upload it but here is the full resolution image:
