@Hogne: it holds to no country now. The record was 53 years. I think you are trying to say which country is next that has yet to gain their first win - which would be Malta who first participated in 1971; followed by Cyprus (1981), and Iceland (1986). In terms of "most appearances without a win by a country yet to win", the answer is Cyprus rather than Malta. Malta debuted 10 years earlier than Cyprus, true, but Cyprus has 4 more appearances than Malta for the same (lack of) success, as Malta took more time away from Eurovision than Cyprus has. Malta and Iceland - by virtue of various interruptions to participation/relegation during the 90s - are both on 30 appearances for no wins. BigHaz - Schreit mich an 22:21, 15 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Forgive the stupidity on my part, but is that actually how the EBU would classify it? I'd intended that as a sort of argument to absurdity, but where Eurovision's concerned, that never quite seems to work! BigHaz - Schreit mich an 00:28, 16 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

To editor BigHaz: indeed it is how the EBU classify it. Eurovision.tv even state 53-year history for Portugal. And if my calculations are correct, 2017—1964=53. Even the BBC stated Portugal have waited 53 years for their first win. So it is based on years and not appearances. If you can recall back to when Finland won, the EBU did say they had waited 45 years for their first win. And that the holders of the longest wait went to Portugal who were currently at 42 years. That was 9 years ago, so yeah, it would add up right as a 53-year wait. Wes Wolf Talk 00:54, 16 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Good point. I'll admit that while I knew enough of ESC history in 2006 to know that Finland had been a by-word for futility, I didn't know enough then to realise that the counting wasn't done in the most obvious way! Is there an official EBU statement to the effect that Malta, Cyprus or someone else is now the holder of the unwanted honour? I've had a quick look, but am yet to find anything. There's also the possibility that the new "streak without a win" could apply to France, somewhat bizarrely, as it's 40 years this year since their last win in 1977.
