Possible edits to this article re: black identity in the postbellum period[edit]

Hi! I'd like to propose adding more historical context for this article by adding some discussion of the issues regarding black identity and its suppression during this period. Specifically, I'd like to look at the point of view of Armand and dig more into why he had to drive away Désirée by discussing miscegenation and the importance of whiteness to uphold the status quo of white supremacy even after the Civil War in the South.
