Change to a Redirect[edit]

Just as the Dallas Texans (AFL) is a redirect, to the current team, the Kansas City chiefs (and is included in the history there), this one should redirect to the current team, the Indianapolis Colts.

In any case, they should both probably work the same way.

I disagree. In the case of the AFL Texans, ownership was maintained by essentially the same people as it was a relocation, while the NFL Texans limped to the end of the 1952 season, folded, and then were sold. The Texans actually had a stronger connection with the New York Yanks (albeit a tenuous one at best) than with the second Baltimore Colts franchise. A redirect would be appropriate if it were to a continuation of the franchise (for example, from Los Angeles Chargers to San Diego Chargers, or Cleveland Rams and Los Angeles Rams to St. Louis Rams); but no such continuation occurred after the folding of the NFL Texans. 147.70.242.39 22:03, 6 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

This team is considered to be part of the official lineage of the Indianapolis Colts[edit]

I am a former employee of the Indianapolis Colts. I worked secrity at the Hoosier Dome/RCA Dome. What brought me to search up *defunct nfl teams* was the fact that during my time working for the Colts, the "official Lineage" of the Colts franchise was painted eastern wall of the room that all security employees had to go to check in and get thier section assignments. Which sparked curiosity in me. This room was called, Touchdown Club North. This room was also open to the public during NFL games as well asother events held inside the Dome and Indiana Convention Center. It included fancy seating private concessions and restrooms as well as souvenier stands and large screen tv's. Enough of describing the room, but anyways the point of this is that on the eastern wall, the Official Colts Lineage is listed as follows:

1. Boston Yanks 1944-48 2. New York Bulldogs 1949 3. New York Yanks 1950-51 4. Dallas Texans 1952 5. Baltimore Colts 1953-83 6. Indianapolis Colts 1984-Present

Why did the 1952 Dallas Texans franchise fail?[edit]

In the article regarding the Dallas Texans NFL franchise of 1952, an implicit assertion is made that the franchise failed solely because racism. Specifically, "[t]here was also an issue that neither the team nor the NFL could control: the racism that existed in the Southern United States at the time and the subsequent civil rights movement that would take place later in the decade. Two of the team's best players, George Taliaferro and Buddy Young, were both African-American, which made some fans automatically turn away from the team simply because of prejudice. The racism that existed at the time was likely why Pittsburgh Steelers owner Art Rooney was the lone dissenting vote in moving the Yanks to Dallas due to concern about racism as well as the Rooney family giving African-Americans opportunities in later decades that most NFL teams wouldn't give.[1]"

On what basis is this assertion made? It is unethical, unfair, and frankly racist in and of itself, to stigmatize all Southerners as racist by claiming the team failed because "[t]wo of the team's best players..... were both African-American, which made fans automatically turn away from the team simply because of prejudice." This statement represents a prejudicial and unfair generalization about Southerners and the people of Dallas more specifically. While racism have been a factor effecting some potential supporters, what other factors likely contributed to the failure of the franchise? Perhaps the NFL and the owners of the Texans failed to effectively market the team in Dallas (insufficient advertisting, high ticket prices, etc)? Perhaps people did not want to spend their hard-earned money and time supporting a losing team? In all likelihood, there is a myriad of reasons why the team failed. Without sufficient evidence to support the claim that the team failed solely because of racism, I believe this entire paragraph should be either deleted or edited substantially.

I am son (middle of 5 boys) of primary owner and source of money, Giles E. Miller. He stated to me many times before his death in 1988 that racism in Dallas in 1952 was the major contributing factor to the failure of the Dallas Texans. Born in 1946, I grew up in Dallas. Overt racism existed in Dallas in fact and in theory in 1952.
