  • ALT0: ... that Kurdish nationalist Dara Tawfiq was editor of Iraq's only independent newspaper in the early 1970s? Source: "The genuine Al-Taakhi had been the only really free paper in Iraq for a long time" "Iraq — Kurds without a press". Index on Censorship. 3 (3): 77–77. 1974-09-01. doi:10.1080/03064227408532353. ISSN 0306-4220.
  • ALT1: ... that after Kurdish nationalist Dara Tawfiq expressed his opposition to the Iran–Iraq War, he was arrested in 1981 and never seen again?

  • Being "disappeared" by a regime or its thugs for opposing its war seems (tragically) routine these days. I'd vote ("!vote") for the original hook. -- Hoary (talk) 05:15, 19 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • I'm not in favour of ALT1 on the basis that it is too negative; a hook purely on the manner of Tawfiq's death is sensationalist. While the manner of some people's deaths can be considered noteworthy (eg Nicolae Ceaușescu or Nguyễn Văn Lém), that's not the case here.--Goldsztajn (talk) 08:06, 19 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • New enough, long enough, neutrally written, well referenced, no close paraphrasing seen. Hook is interesting; hook ref verified and cited inline. Image in article is freely licensed. No QPQ needed for nominator with less than 5 DYK credits. The only issue is that this article needs to be linked in at least one other Wikipedia article to avoid an orphan tag. • Yoninah Thank you for completing the review and apologies for the delay in coming back. There is now a link to Dara Tawfiq in the article about Chris Kutschera, the French specialist on Kurdish affairs.--Goldsztajn (talk) 22:35, 16 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
