Check the compilation Le Cabaret Des Ombres (The Cabaret of Shadows) by DJ FACT.50

http://rickamortis.livejournal.com/168762.html#cutid1

After seeing Projekt's recent compilation "A Dark Cabaret" I decided to do my own rendition of the theme. This comp: Le Cabaret Des Ombres (The Cabaret of Shadows), combines classic acts with a few modern ones, and a handfull of New Wave/Goth musicians that were all inspired by the Weirmar era of 1930's Berlin, and the Parisian scene of the 20's. Not all of this is strictly cabaret, a few tracks are more along the smoky jazzy noir lines (including my own contribution), but they all blend together quite nicely I must say.

Wow how random. Never thought I'd see someone quoting my LJ posts on wikipedia. =) --FACT50 19:27, 8 November 2006 (UTC)

The Dirty Business Brigade

The Dirty Business Brigade is a worldwide group of performers intimately associated with The Dresden Dolls. We are not exclusive. We welcome newcomers with open hearts and are constantly seeking new ideas.

Our goal is to create worlds of beauty and art inside the typical world. They say "Life is a cabaret" and our mission is to make it feel that way. It's up to us to make it happen. We are creative people supporting other people being creative.

Ideally, we'd like to take this beyond the venues provided by The Dresden Dolls and we encourage everyone to perform on the streets in their own towns, or at hospitals for children, or on the bus, or at other events, or anywhere you can think of to add an extra touch of beauty to the world.

Join us! Indulge your fantasies of becoming a character or show off your talents. Come discuss plans at the Command Center: the Shadowbox.net

DAHLIA

Best described as electro-cabaret, Berlin based Dahlia's unique theatrical style of performance revisits Dietrich...if Dietrich had done post-punk electro disco. DINKY "Black Cabaret"

"Alejandra Iglesias Rivera, more conveniently known as Dinky, has finally released her new album after years of hard work in the New York underground. She previously recorded as Miss Dinky, but has since dropped the "Miss" moniker for her new full-length album, Black Cabaret. With only several other releases under her belt and a new album released in the United States, you would think that everything is going her way. Unfortunately, that's not exactly true in this situation. Dinky was forced to leave the United States due to an expired Visa and is now unable to fully support the release of her new album. It's so unfortunate, too, because this is an album that deserves a lot more attention than it will probably receive. Although that may be the case, I don't think Black Cabaret will have much trouble ranking fairly high on my favorites list at the end of this year." - M. Starr "Amneziak"

She released "Black Cabaret" cd on Carpark Records.

Darko Rundek

Apocaliptic cabaret music

Haustor, Darko Rundek's band was one of the best and the greatest bands in ex-Yugoslavia. Still it's cult band honored by all music fans accross ex-Yu republics. His solo debut Apokalipso was amazing. Now it's not classic one but at least really good. - Balkanopithecus

Darko Rundek’s deranged folk cabaret, teetering on the edge of sanity and incorporating kaleidoscope influences will be immediately recognisable to those who know him through Apocalypso or his former group Haustor.

The album’s sub-title Migration stories and love songs is most appropriate in a work trying to sum up “loneliness of the exile and the placelessness of the Internet, the reality of modern metropolis and the utopia of a love that transcends all borders.” The multiple voices on the album, its frequent shifts of pace and style and its unpredictability gather together the idea of exile, and the warm grooves, such as the one he sets up in ‘Sensimillija’ are islands of peace in the noise of the rest of the album, with Rundek’s growl reminding the listener this isn’t a place to relax.

The album kicks off with the dark ‘U-Bahn’, a multi-lingual introduction to its themes, closely followed by ‘Slick Senorita’s’ horns blaring to plucked Spanish guitar, to samples of car horns and a manic Rundek raving over the top.

‘Sensimillija’ is one of the standout tracks, exploring the narrative of a lonely man seeking solace in the internet and a smoke although it’s hard to pick tracks out of so varied a selection, and such imaginative production. The Croation folk element is certainly in evidence, although so is a smattering of jazz, rock ‘n roll, dance and heavy rock (in the subtly building backing in ‘Highlander’. This approach is of a type that reminds me of the post-apocalyptic cabaret of Boris Kovac: it maintains the recklessness of Kovac although instead of placing its subjects in a future dystopia it is all about the present.

It’s intelligent, witty, dark and engaging. For something outside your safe sphere of music, go where Darko Rundek can be found.

Quick question

I know I'm probably talking out of my ass, but I thought I'd throw this out and see what all y'all think: what about Siouxsie and the Banshees album Peek-A-Boo--especially the title track--as an influence to the genre? It seems to be a prototypical fusion of goth and cabaret sounds that characterize the rest of the sound. Thoughts?

GAMINE

Gamine are clearly a band out of time for 2003. Frozen in a period of film noir, the duo of Ian - who composes - and Claudia Barton, the chanteuse, have delivered an album of classy, wounded ballads that belong to another era altogether. They even offer gifts of their own brand of perfume to their "lady fans" at concerts. Sedate and morose, they are like a less tricksy version of Goldfrapp; their vision unadorned by trip-hop effects which makes their music even more authentically filmic. Occasional diversions into unusual song structures like tango in 'Black Window' offer pleasing surprises but their defining moment is the show-stopping eight minutes of 'A Good Hand', a classic melodramatic moment by anyone's standards.

Sabotage: originally a French word meaning to wander about in wooden, peasant clogs, carelessly breaking things. Well, it must be hard to look elegant in clogs, look at the Dutch... Gamine don't actually wear clogs, well, not in public at any rate, but they do make music, which is a far more respectable pursuit in their opinion. In fact, they made so much that they decided to collect it all together as a gift to their adoring fans, though, of course, the adoring fans will demand to pay for it - some may even donate a month's wages just to get their hands on one of these precious little discs. Gamine: originally a French word (actually, still is) meaning a kid (female),

which the fashion industry got their grubby hands on (the word, and, possibly,

the kid too) and transformed into... etc. etc. - well, we have to assume that you have at least the beginnings of a classical education and already know all this so we'll get straight to the propaganda... The saboteurs in question are Claudia and Ian who sing and compose respectively. They like melody. They like words. They like old films noirs, showgirls, torch songs, vinyl lps, Billy MacKenzie's voice, French words and pretty dresses. They like to soothe and unsettle all at once, to provoke and reassure and entertain, to make the unfamiliar familiar, and the familiar unforgettable. In the end it all boils down to an album of gorgeously moody melancholia which is tinged with jazz, country, tango and romance, though is really none of these if strict modern categorisation is followed. In any case, our job is just to provide the music, it's yours to describe it. Gamine also decided it would be nice for their glamorous and sophisticated lady fans if they designed a scent for them to wear whilst listening to their idols' music. So, after extensive research by Gamine's team of scientists into new, sensual scent molecules, 'Sabotage' the perfume was born. And at the moment it is available exclusively from Gamine, at their concerts and, after a long search for a boutique stylish and chic enough to be able to handle such a rare commodity proved unsuccessful, from their own cyber-boutique. Yes, Gamine's generosity knows no bounds as they often reward their fans with concerts, and when they do, they like to make them special, playing in unusual and interesting venues with the loveliest guest artistes they can find.

THE DEAD BROTHERS

The Dead Brothers Story the dead brothers, more or less what's left of a symphony orchestra after their car crashed today. some heavy metal wind instruments (Tubas, trombones and bass saxophone) a megaphone and a top hat, a nasty french accordion and some sweet lap steel country. Bringing rock'n'roll back to Europe by exploring the musical roots that led to it's birth or what would the european music that led to rock'n'roll, sound like today? They make Satie rhyme with Birthday Party, and the Saints singing Besame Mucho. They're a macabre rock'n'roll party and an old fashioned wedding at the same time. Need your sense of humour when they stage gruesome deaths singing Hank Williams and Jimmie Rodgers. The Cramps wrote they liked their rendering of Human Fly. The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion and Tom Waits got their records.Thomas Wydler of the Bad Seeds says their Tod Von Basel penned in the 16th century sounds pretty nasty. Toured tons with Bob Log III and England with T-Model Ford the tale dragger from Greenville, and they know personally the Reverend Beat-man himself. They are fans of The Kift, famous dutch surrealist jazz family. The Dead Brothers sing blues tunes out of ancient Europe (Totentanz) and famous cajun-core french swingh from Bombay. They've been called THE BEST FUNERAL ORCHESTRA along with tubas and electric guitar and the most bizarre act to have appeared in Europe. Felt at home in Russia, but go as much as possible to the swiss mountains. Some say they are paradoxal. Difficult to get along with. Try good food. They started staging a travelling doctor selling some potion from table to table, storming cafis with the well-named Cirque Electrique. They wrote a musical about ...death played on a boat during the swiss national exhibition in 2002, "Day of the Dead" featured Eleni Mandell, DJ Khan, Reverend Beatman and the whole dead family.

Schizowave

Dark cabaret sounds with electronic and rock tunes.

Schizowave sounds like Bjork having sex with Tom Waits in the back of an old smoky piano bar.

Lena Potapova who formed Schizowave in early 2004, is a crazy screaming freak who you would either love or hate. Or may be both.

She expresses herself loud. She has traveled around Asia all by herself with next to nothing in her pockets. She has managed Makye Ame Restaurant in Tibet. She has spent a month in an American jail as a suspected Russian spy. She has opened an gallery /performance space in Chicago to help other local artists. She has been called a hippie, a punk, an idealistic idiot and a cynical bitch. She believes in passion, and if you can't take the heat, don't listen to her music.

Schizowave can surprise any audience with the wide range of their musical abilities. They play anything from a moody blend of trip hop and jazz to mainstream rock to heavy metal, and yet their sound has so much individuality that it can not be confused with anybody else.

Lena's dark music and unusual low vocals have been compared to Bjork, Diamanda Galas and "female Tom Waits". However, one of the funniest definitions of her singing was given by a Chicago hard core lover who said "You sound like Norah Jones on crack" (no, he was not trying to be sweet).

Lena is a classically trained piano player who was born in Moscow, Russia. At the age of nine she had her first public performance at Saratov Conservatory and Symphony Center. At the age of thirteen she performed her own musical composition at Moscow Conservatory. Lena has played at known venues both in Europe and in the US. She has been featured on various commercial and college radio stations, as well as TV programs, on both continents.

Currently she is in the final stages of casting for a theatricalized musical performance based on her compositions.

Luminescent Orchestrii

"The balancing of frenzy and finesse is evidently a trademark Luminescent Orchestrii approach, displayed to its utmost in the insanely frenetic dance tunes... The three violins flirt willfully with a cacophony teasingly offset by elegant classical flourishes, swirling and eddying above the rhythm section's bruisingly aggressive but sharply-aimed attack." **** (four star review at The Edinburgh Fringe 2005) -THE SCOTSMAN.

Romanian gypsy melodies, punk frenzy, salty tangos, hard rocking klezmer, haunting Balkan harmony, hip-hop beats and Appalachian fiddle, all eaten and spit out by three violins, resophonic guitar, bullhorn harmonica and 3/4 Argentinian bass.

The Luminescent Orchestrii has developed a reputation for ecstatic live performances and infectious onstage energy.

Barbez

Barbez takes shape in a sunstruck phantasm; Kurt Weill swims the length of a still pond, underwater The Residents are refurbishing their home, Erik Satie descends from above to lie in the grass and sip seltzer. Shapes emerge from flowering trees and a Dionysian wedding dance ensues. Provoked by such musics as French musette, Argentine tango, post-war classical and pre-MTV punk, Barbez wrings these disparate worlds to form anew in the band's own soundscape.

The group began in 1997 with members whose backgrounds encompass jazz, classical, and rock. The band is made up of musicians from the following musicians, our own little musical collective: Dan Kaufman (guitar and vocals), Pamelia Kurstin (theremin and vocals), Danny Tunick (marimba, vibes), Dan Coates (bass, electronics), Peter Hess (clarinets), Peter Lettre (bass, guitar), Cecile Genevieve Brasil Boehler (soprano sax, vocals), Sarah Bernstein (violin), John Bollinger (drums), Shahzad Ismaily (drums), Catherine McCrae (violin).

Barbez has recorded three albums all of them engineered and mixed by the incomparable Martin Bisi. Frequent collaborations with other musicians, both live and in the studio, have included cellist Julia Kent (Antony and the Johnsons), vocalist Nils Frykdahl (Sleepytime Gorilla Museum), drummer Anthony Nozero (Drums and Tuba), and toy instrument ingenue Rebecca Moore. Barbez is currently at work on its fourth album. Barbez also has a long-standing collaboration with downtown theatre pioneer, John Jesurun, appearing frequently in Jesurun’s long-running avant-soap opera, Chang in a Void Moon. For years, Barbez has been a constant, vibrant part of the New York music scene and the group tours frequently across the U.S. and Europe. Over the years the group has been privileged to perform with a wide variety of artists including Cat Power, Sun Ra Arkestra, godspeed you! black emperor, Faun Fables, Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, DKT/MC5, Devendra Banhart, the Dresden Dolls, the Lonesome Organist, Shelley Hirsch, Faun Fables, and the Angels of Light.

Martin Martini and The Bone Palace Orchestra

Absolutely crazy new band - between Rosin Coven and The Dead Brothers (more close to ROSIN COVEN, imo) !

Think Baz Luhrmann meets Tim Burton, think the Cat Empire with manic depression. Beat Magazine

Funk, junk, circus, rock with everything from punk to gypsy in between, Martin Martini and The Bone Palace Orchestra create an infectious sound of old-world grooves. Coupled with head-high Tackle-lyrics delivered in an uncompromising Australian pirate-roar, this collection of anachronistic political themes and the little things in life have drawn an ever increasing cult following hooked on the addictive music and the unpredictable nature of their stage shows.

These songs are catchy, farcical, poetic, political and bee-boppingly eccentric andreally make you want to Take your Skin off and Dance Impress Magazine

A 600-seat sell-out album launch in Melbourne and crowds of up to 2000 people at the Adelaide Fringe are testament to the warm embrace of a band with a truly unique vision of musical performance.

Fat Vaudevillian Rock n Roll... Menacingly attractive, there is something of the wild-eyed malevolent pied piper about Martini and his crew of misfits and neer-do-wells. Expect to be seduced and appalled in equal measure Lily Bragge, The Age

The six-piece outfit was collected by the enigmatic front-man Martin Martini from off the streets of Melbourne and includes Peter Burgess on Tuba, James Macaulay on trombone, Ben Hendry on drums, Sam Dunscombe on Clarinet, Xani Kolac on violin and Martin Martini as the wailing and moaning master of ceremonies on keyboard.

Venues/Performances in 2006 include The Famous Spiegeltent (Melbourne Arts Festival/Adelaide Fringe Festival), The Sydney Opera House, The Forum, The Hi-Fi Ballroom, Woodford Folk Festival, The Spanish Club, The Malthouse, Bar Open, The Evelyn and a one year residency at The Famous Rainbow Hotel. They are collaborating with Paul Kelly later this year for the Spiegeltent.

The debut album Dream Until You Die is a rousing collection of rollicking oom-pah dance tunes and anarchic ballads. The Bone Palace recorded in an old run down picture theatre in Hawthorn and the album includes the use of a 40 man drunk choir, six year old kids as back up singers, valve radios, megaphones and gramophones, all adding to the uniqueness of original tunes that somehow elude to the Magical.

Lucky Town The Empty Pocket Opera, and original show created for the 2005 Melbourne Fringe Festival was nominated for a Green Room Award.

All I can say is that after you leave one of their performances you may get the feeling that the last hour of your life was nothing but a strange dream. DB Magazine

the Tallyman's dark OMNIBUS

Bleak, dark and gothic stories from Englands most innovative performer & songwriter. Children play in the cemetery as a man becomes so dispossessed he pretends to be someone else in his diaries whilst a child prostitute's ghost haunts the streets where she was murdered. Influenced by artists as diverse as Brel, Brecht/Weil and Walker, this actor & performer's appearances within the UK have been described as, Cyber Cabaret. Sequencers and synthesisers alongside guitar and fretless bass support the Tallymans sonorous voice, weaving a haunting and atmospheric backdrop to stories of a fragile and fragmented world.

Nora Keyes

Another revelation for dark minds - sounds like Jill Tracy meets Andy Sexgang !!!

Nora Keyes first solo album, Songs to Cry by for the Golden Age of Nothing sounds more like an old 78 pried from the arms of a long deceased witch, found in a buried tea chest, in a forgotten woodland that the locals still dare not venture into, than the efforts of a nice Los Angeles born girl, joined here by her talented friends Rebecca Lynn (violin). Ray Day (guitar), Creekbird (brass / drums) and Dame Darcy (auto harp / saw). Famed for eccentric on stage theatrics Ms Keyes is known to transform herself from innocent child to ancient hag all the while accompanying herself on organ. Her singing style is so relentlessly sad it becomes euphoric as it shifts from beautiful soprano to chilling cackles, even wild yodeling during her cover of Jimmy Rogers Old Pal . Her previous band the Centimeters have produced a string of albums since 1996, most notably Facts of destiny produced by Don Bolles (The Germs) and Help Is on the Way produced by David J (Bauhaus / love and rockets), who liked them so much he had them open at the last Love and Rockets show in Los Angeles and has more recently exploited her singing talents for his theme to the upcoming film Black Dahlia. She is currently writing music for a new album with Don Bolles.

Vagabond Opera

Vagabond Opera is a Portland, OR based ensemble that has been entertaining audiences with their unique bohemian absurdist style for the last four years. Their work is an eclectic mix comprised of original and traditional compositions, unified by an old-world mood. Elements of early Ellington, old time Parisian Jazz, Klezmer, Tango, Balkan and Arabic belly dance music mingle with Absurdist, Bohemian, Neo-Classical and European Cabaret style, all played with skill, exuberance and a gritty vagabond edge. Eric Stern, operatic tenor, accordionist, pianist, and composer, founded the band and his voice is the lead instrument and unifying thread. He is supported by Robin Jackson on tenor saxophone, Leslie Kernochan on operatic soprano, and alto saxophone, Jason Flores on upright bass, and cellist Skip vonKuske, and percussionist Mark Burdon, as they play songs about thieves, Jewish weddings, Parisian tramps and the enigmatic Marlene Dietrich. Every show is a cabaret of rich musical phrasing, sparkling lyrics and indomitable stage presence. Their musical versatility and extensive repertoire allows them to be equally at home in classical concerts, Jazz halls, contemporary cabarets, and bohemian bar stomps. Let Vagabond Opera spirit you away to the old world of travelers, tramps and wandersom buskers.

Hurdy-Gurdy

"Hurdy-Gurdy throbs on the verge of a BAROQUE UNIVERSE, draped in dark velvet, of mischievious, eloquent and whimsical poetry. Its secret formula is a subtle blend of ROCK-CABARET-BALLAD, where guitar and singing saw set drums and keyboards ablaze. A most virile voice can only be subdued at times by a melancholy xylophone. The alchemy often shifts from violence to softness, resolutely haunted by the two-headed shadow of Nick Cave and Serge Gainsbourg" Journalist Eleonore Colin, for the rock and culture magazine Les Inrockuptibles

Harlequin Jones

Sounds like The Dreaden Dolls, Vermillion Lies, etc.

The blues siren. The vaudeville villain. The cabaret chanteuse. The jilted lover. The trash and the treasure. The many faces of Harlequin Jones invade into emotional territory less talked about than explored. An interpetation of piano and drums expressed as music for people bored of music. The missing key to link the ebonies and ivories with pots, pans, and tin cans. With female finesse on the vocals growling along just as quickly as she's belting over their primal union of the piano and percussion in any way she pleases.

Focusing on the dynamic camaraderie between Yishai Arcadio(drums) and Amanda von Loon(piano and pipes), Harlequin Jones exists as a caberet kissed, indie rock piano project. The unpredictable vaudevillion flair of Harlequin Jones may give thanks to the like of Tom Waits, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, and Tori Amos. Miss Von Loon's vocals never cease to ring potent, rich, and nearly husky with range and dynamic as an instrument their own. Yishai Arcadio drums skin-destroying stratagems as if he were made of one part jazz master mixed with one part scrap metal. Together, the piano and drums compliment one another while the accompaniment of the chanteuse’s throaty theatric singing lay the foundation for cryptic lyrics to sketch sometimes sexy, sometimes unsettling imagery.

Harlequin Jones became a fully functional weapon of piano rock in 2004 and continue at full force.

On inclusiveness

With the list of albums and the List of Dark cabaret artists, I think this article is becoming far too inclusive. Acts like Devotchka or Regina Spektor have very little to do with either cabaret or punk, even if they've toured with Dresden Dolls or others. Yes, even if they happen to have "unusual" instruments in today's popular music scene or feature piano strongly. If we can't begin to cite appropriate outside sources here, we're in need of considerable trimming. The articles (and this talk page) are turning into someone's "dark cabaret" playlist and/or an advertisement for any band with an accordion and make-up instead of any sort of authoratative, academic, and verifiable statement on what dark cabaret is. Bjart 20:40, 17 December 2006 (UTC)

The article continues to grow without discussion. External links are being added without any support in the article itself, links to artists not notable enough for their own article. I don't want to make ultimatums, but I'd like to see this article improve in quality more than quantity. Bjart 16:06, 1 January 2007 (UTC)
If I knew more about Wikipedia, I'd nominate this for deletion. A search for the phrase on Google suggests that, outside of 'pedia's mirrors and the Projekt.com album, this genre does not exist at all. I suspect goths are attracted to the phrase, but applying it to both Clare Fader and Gogol Bordello (as suggested above) is going too far. This may not be helpful, but as a passive Wikipedia user, I felt obligated to comment on the worst page I've seen here. As you say, the talk page is also pretty terrible. 128.135.6.3 07:34, 17 January 2007 (UTC)
