Copyedits[edit]

I have made a number of edits to improve the readability of this article, and to bring it in line with Wikipedia:Manual of Style:

  • I have removed a lot of "also"s that were unnecessary. They create the impression of stream-of-counsciousness writing, rather than independent concepts.
  • Using "currently" with the present tense is redundant: the present tense indicates the current condition, so "currently" doesn't change the meaning of the sentence - it just takes up space.
  • Per WP:TRADEMARK, Time magazine is not written all in capitals letters in Wikipedia.
  • I have removed the incorrect of use of "both... and". "The "both... and" construction is used to provide emphasis (where needed) to indicate that you are referring to both of two possibilities, e.g., "both men and women". It is incorrect to use it where there are more than two possibilities, and it is not needed where there is not need for additional emphasis. The conjunction "and" is normally sufficient.
  • I replaced the vernacular "wooing" with "recruiting".
  • I replaced the clumsy "He is also a President Obama–appointed trustee of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts." with "He was appointed by President Barack Obama as a trustee of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts." The compound adjective for trustee is more comprehensible as a verb.
  • Acronyms like AJC should be spelled out the first time they are used per WP:ACRONYM.

Hi Ground Zero, I would like you to go over each of your edits and each of the sentences you changed. Per WP:BRD, you need to make your case and establish consensus before changing the status quo of an article if your edits have been contested or reverted. I have re-read this article on a regular basis during the past year, and I have fine tuned the wording for sense and absolute clarity each time, ensuring that the wording is in no way ambiguous or possibly misleading, and insuring that the wording flows smoothly rather than choppily.
1. In general, I disagree with removing many of the "also"s that you removed -- in the instances where I disagree, they are specifically used here in instances where the word adds clarity and specificity and where ambiguity would be greater without the word. When used to refer to something radically different from the preceding sentence, they help the reader understand that this is a different and unrelated piece of information. This is necessary in an encyclopedia which telescopes and compacts information so radically. A bulletted list would not use "also"s, because the bullets provide the necessary differentiation and transition; however to preserve word flow and continuity in a single paragraph which contains radically differentiated items, "also" is useful both for ease of understanding and for grace and style of wording.
If you like, I can go back and selectively remove the "also"s which I consider expendable, and retain those that I consider necessary.
2. In terms of TIME magazine in citations, on Wikipedia I have most commonly seen it all caps in citations. I have routinely had it changed to all caps in citations when I had personally had it otherwise (e.g., [1], [2]). I think the general feeling is, despite the unilateral wording of WP:TRADEMARK, that the word is such a common English word that the all caps in citations helps the reader comprehend what it refers to, since the reader does not see the word "magazine", and also, the title is not preceded by an article as it is, for instance, in the German national newspaper Die Zeit (The Time). Therefore it is most helpful for the reader to put it in all caps, since that removes any confusion or ambiguity.
3. The word "both" occurs in the 38,000-byte article only twice -- both times in extremely strategic usages where to omit it would be less instantly clear, more ambiguous, and less easy to completely comprehend. It is not incorrect to use the word "both" where there are more than two possibilities. It is an emphasizer, a differentiater, and so on.
4. I use the word "wooing" advisedly, because that is exactly what Bohnett did -- if you read all of the relevant material in the sources cited ([3], [4]) that becomes clear.
5. In terms of "He was appointed by President Barack Obama as a trustee of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts", I think that is acceptable. It takes the emphasis off of the honor and off of Kennedy Center, and puts it more on Obama, but I agree the wording itself is less clumsy.
6. Agree to spelling out of American Jewish Committee -- by the time I got down that far in the changes you made, I thought you had done the reverse. :-) A dyslexic reading of the diff, I guess. LOL.

Hi Softlavender, I restored my edits because you did not provide any explanation for reverting, and you reverted all of the edits, including the WP:ACRONYM one, so it looked like a drive-by revert. Thank you for explaining your reasoning ts above.

  1. I can see the argument for restoring some of the "also"s - it really did seem to me lijke there were just so many of them that they were being used just to bridge the whole article together unnecessarily. I have an aversion to pleonasm as it makes the article less enjoyable to read.
  2. I took a look through [{WP:TRADEMARK]] for any discussion about handling citation differently from text, and I don't see it. I know that some prople discagree with Wikipedia policy here, and many of them choose to ignore it, but I think if you need to clarify what "Time" is, it is even clearer to write "Time magazine" than to capitalize it as "TIME" may not mean much to readers outside of the U.S.
  3. I was incorrect in how I described the use of "both" above. I will take a look at the two instances again, bbut on my first read it looked to me like unnecessary emphasis.
  4. I have a problem with "wooing" as I think it is overly colloquial for an encyclopedia, although it would be fine for a news article. Is there a better word than "recruiting"?

I'm open to discussing further. Regards, Ground Zero | t 15:50, 20 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Business School[edit]

Postcard Cathy, please quote verbatim where you imagine the article states that Bohnett attended the "USC business school". Since it doesn't, and he didn't, please replace the category you have erroneously deleted three times: Category:University of Southern California alumni. -- Softlavender (talk) 08:27, 10 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Reading comprehension again. It says he received a BS in Business Administration. The school offers a bachelors program. Unless of course, the Film School would be more appropriate? Also, if you go to the Marshall School page, it says he attended. But you must be right. A BS in business administration can not be from the Business School. Impossible. Postcard Cathy (talk) 08:34, 10 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
"Bohnett was interested in business at an early age, selling Amway products and delivering newspapers. In high school he became fascinated by computers, and chose to attend college at the University of Southern California – where he received a BS in business administration – because it was one of the few universities at the time with a computer science program.[2] He put himself through college by waiting tables and other service jobs.[7]". Please indent your talk page posts properly (I have done that for you above). Please provide a citation that Bohnett attended the Marshall School of Business. You cannot use Wikipedia as a citation. All of the citations that we have state that he attended the University of Sourthen California, so the category Category:University of Southern California alumni needs to be replaced/retained. Softlavender (talk) 08:47, 10 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Postcard Cathy, the citation you posted [5] is not an alumni page, nor does it indicate that Bohnett attended the Marshall School of Business. It is a page for the Centers of Excellence, which Bohnett is apprently involved in as a philanthropist. Softlavender (talk) 08:59, 10 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Postcard Cathy, there is no indication anywhere that Bohnett attended the Marshall School of Business. You can check yourself: [6]. -- Softlavender (talk) 09:12, 10 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Postcard Cathy, I am going to give you one more chance to explain your removal of a category supported by the article and by citations (Category:University of Southern California alumni), and your placement of an incorrect category not supported by the article or by any available citation or reliable-source evidence (Category:Marshall School of Business alumni). A few minutes ago you yourself removed the erroneous information that you had previously erroneously added to the article. Why are you therefore re-adding the erroneous category? I would appreciate a reply. Softlavender (talk) 10:21, 10 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
