Yearly performance[edit]

It is such a waste that the numbers and details with respect to a specific edition of the Davis Cup might be deleted or removed when a successive edition is held. Hence, these can be moved to its own page (i.e. "2004 Davis Cup" with all the related details), and be linked here through the years in the table. Joey80 05:08, 8 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Participating Nations[edit]

I think it will be very clarifying to know when "new" countries were added to the competition. For the best part of the XX century only a handful of countries played the Davis Cup, hence the high numbers of winnings by USA and Australia, so the numbers alone, without some history, are somehow misleading. Also, up to 1972, the winner went directly to the finals of the following year... Nazroon 04:01, 4 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Splitting/removing sections[edit]

I've proposed that giant table of winners be split into it's own article, similar to the list of Tour de France winners. I also think that the "recent finals" section needs to be deleted, as it's just a repeat of information on the individual years' pages. Chris 09:04, 12 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, so when did New Zealand join Australia?[edit]

Why does Australasia go to the Australian team. Australasia doesn't = Australia. Australia + New Zealand (a separate nation) = Australasia. Please fix this appalling issue. Thank you.

The Australasian Team competed as a joint AUS/NZ team from 1905-13. The ITF counts Australasia's records under Australia (although Tony Wilding was one of the more successful of the team's players), just as Yugoslavia's records reside under Serbia, the Czechoslovakian records under the Czech Republic, and others. Yes, politics is a problem for longrunning competitions like DC, I would prefer to have Czechoslovakia and Slovakia as one.

Move Explanation of "Tie" to a New Article[edit]

The word "tie" is not unique to the Davis Cup but is used in almost all cup competitions to mean an elimination round in the cup competition.

Therefore, I suggest that a new article be written for "Tie (cup competitions)" and that much of the explanation of the "tie" in the Davis Cup article be moved there. Oconnell usa (talk) 04:24, 14 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sweden must be disqualified and punished![edit]

Where can we write about political protests against Davis Cup? How detailed can we be?
Davis Cup games in Sweden has been affected three time by political protests, often from left-wing people including the government:
  • The game between Sweden and Rhodesia 1968 was supposed to be played in Båstad but was moved to Bandol, France, due to protests against the Ian Smith "white racist" regime.
  • The Swedish government tried to stop the game between Chile and Sweden in 1975 in Båstad, due to violations of human rights in Chile. The game was played, but 7,000 people were protesting against it.
  • Many Swedes were upset by the 2008–2009 Israel–Gaza conflict, where 1330 Palestinians were killed by the Israeli army, to a major part civilians. (The conflict was described in Swedish media and by several politicians as an unproportional revenge on the Palestinians - although Hamas also are critized by the Swedish politicians. The attack happened as a reaction on 20 killed Israelis during the 2007–2008 Israel–Gaza conflict, and "only" 13 killed Israelis killed by Qassam robots during 2001 through 2007.) 6,000 people were protesting outside the Malmö city Davis Cup in March 2009.[1]. The Malmö city politicians expected this protest storm, and were afraid of extremists, and decided due to alleged security reasons to only let a small audience in.[2]. Slovakia and Czechoslovakia?[edit]

I think both Czech rep and Slovakia should be credited for the Czechoslovakian win in Davis Cup.

Picture Needed![edit]

I know this is probably not a big deal, but I think there should be a picture of the cup on the page. I have no idea what it looks like, and I was surprised to see that there wasn't a picture. I don't know the rules on pictures or anything, so I won't post one, but just an idea, if someone could post one on the page. Thanks! Name and wartime suspension[edit]

Two things appear to be missing from the article:

  • There do not seem to be events in 1940–1945. I assume it was suspended during the war?
  • It apparently was named the International Lawn Tennis Challenge in 1900–1939, and Davis Cup 1946–present. It says it was "soon known as" the Davis Cup, but is the renaming official and shouldn't the dates be mentioned?

Serbia and Yugoslavia[edit]

Why are achievements made by Yugoslavia attributed only to Serbia? Where every single tennis player in the Yugoslav Davis Cup team from 1981 Serbian? Even according to official DC site, Serbian statistic starts in 1991. No major player (with regards to results) in Yugoslavian team was Serbian so attributing Yugoslavian DC history to Serbia is ridiculous. 37.205.96.44 (talk) 21:25, 8 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

List of Davis Cup Captains?[edit]

Lots of outdated information[edit]

Given the changes to the finals, and to ranking points, a lot of the article presents information as if it is current, where it needs to be expressed as the situation in the past. This is quite an important tennis article and really needs some attention from someone who knows the subject. Stevebritgimp (talk) 02:20, 27 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Ambiguous subsections[edit]

I cannot wrap my head around two subsections in the Records and stats section:

  1. World Group year count. Is the overall count meant from 1972, when the ATP was formed, or what? If so, it should be stated with a footnote or something indicating what period does it encompass. It certainly cannot be all time, since USA have made more than 60 finals, which debunks their World Group count, UNLESS the World group was named differently in the earlier years, which I am not privy to as of right now.
  2. World Group wins. I am not sure, whether this indicates ties or something else. Again, it's dubious. When did this count begin? Open era or later than that? I was thinking matches won, but the win count is way too low for that.

My proposal: Maybe change their titles, update them if out-of-date or something to better reflect the main intent/purpose/scope of the subsections. If anyone could elaborate on this ambiguity to have a clearer picture of what said subsections are meant to represent, would be much appreciated. Japan and Chile have never won the Davis Cup[edit]

Japan and Chile have a footnote attached to them suggesting they have won both the Davis Cup and Junior Davis Cup when their best results are as finalists at the Davis Cup. Format section needs updating[edit]

The current section is out of date and needs rewriting. The top level of the competition now consists of Qualifiers, followed by the Finals played as two stages: Group Stage and Final 8. Below that you have World Group 1 and World Group 2. NickImison (talk) 22:32, 18 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
