Better Picture?

World first?

So I saw on the band's website that with their single "You are a tourist", they accomplished a world premiere, being them broadcasting "the first ever LIVE, scripted, one-take music video broadcast to the world as it was filmed" (http://www.deathcabforcutie.com/news/you-are-a-tourist-live-stream). Emo

As stupid as it is that they are considered emo, we need to include it because some reliable source says so. But it shouldn't say "Death Cab For Cutie is an emo band". We should replace "emo" with indie. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.113.82.116 (talk) 17:09, 4 June 2011 (UTC)

"Emo"

The opening sentence of the article presently states that DCFC is an emo band. I feel that Wikipedia's condensation of a band into a genre in the opening sentence is, in general, a necessary evil, but I can't help but feel that there's a more appropriate choice here. I have seen Death Cab characterized as "alternative" or "indie" much more frequently than as "emo". So I'm just wondering if there's any particular justification for the characterization used here, and if anyone would mind if I changed it to "alternative", which, in my mind, is more accurate. After looking over the sources the article provides for labelling the band as it does I feel that the label is even more inaccurate.... I also agree with 'alternative' for the lead, and I agree that some of the refs are a bit dodgy. Rolling Stone calls them 'indie rock', and Allmusic, which I feel barely qualifies as a reliable source but seems to be accepted by the community here, lists indie rock, alternative/indie rock, alternative pop/rock, dream pop and indie pop. I think we should work with these more generally accepted refs and reject the rest. I think 'emo' is both inaccurate and a bit revisionist. Radiopathy •talk• 03:58, 12 August 2011 (UTC)

I support this compromise until a satisfactory resolution can be attained.
Re. Pitchfork and New York. I don't have any problems with those sources per se. I feel that the problem is more with the articles themselves rather than the website. The Pitchfork "article", for instance, if you want to call it that, is like three lines long and does not strike me at all as convincing evidence for the emo-hood of DCFC. With the New York article... I honestly feel that it's using "emo" more as a parodic term than as an intention to accurately describe the band. Death Cab for Cutie is not an "emo" band. "Death Cab for Cutie has been a few of the Indie rock bands of the 2000s that have been mislabeled as "Emo". Death Cab for Cutie has been mislabeled as emo because of the emotion and melodic themes Death Cab has and also because of the bands name. Just because a band is emotional, it doesn't mean it's emo. Comment As a background to this discussion, the lead sentence of this article, has stated, "Death Cab for Cutie is an American (insert genre here) band..." Some minor edit warring has occurred over what specific genre to include. Examples have been rock, indie rock, alternative rock, and emo. Alt-rock or just rock Of the genres used, I would say that alternative rock would fit this spot of the article best, since two of the subgenres that have been used are emo and indie rock, which fall under the umbrella of alternative rock. I think calling the band "Emo" in the lead might be anti-NPOV, since Emo very often has a negative connotation, and is used disparagingly. However, I have no problems with discussing Emo as a genre later in the article, since sources do describe the band as "Emo". But in the first sentence is not the right place for it. Omit from first sentence, and add new paragraph - Just an idea: why not omit the genre from the first sentence (just leave it at "rock band") and then add a paragraph later on (either in the lead section, or in a new "Genre" section) that discusses the various genres/characterizations of the band. --Noleander (talk) 16:58, 17 August 2011 (UTC)

Omit from first sentence. Genre wars are extremely petty and stupid. My vote is to remove any mention of the band's genre from the first sentence, because if a mere passing mention of a band's genre is so controversial, then taking it away and posting an invisible message in the place of the genre should hopefully reduce the problem. If people are still regularly posting a genre there after it has been taken away, then maybe semiprotection could be implemented. Whatever the case, I am very sick of genre warring in general, as I have seen a lot of it, and none of it even has potential to be important. Any combination of (indie,alternative,null),(pop,rock). Not emo. We don't use "emo" in the lead sections for the famous "emo" bands Linkin Park, My Chemical Romance, or Simple Plan; indeed, only the MCR has that genre in either the lede or the infobox. Sceptre (talk) 01:15, 19 August 2011 (UTC)

Rock or alternative rock. Is it normal to indicate what sort of band the article is about in the first sentence. From memory, the guidelines indicate that should descriptions be general, not least because a band that last an length of time tends to occupy more than one sub-genre, which points to rock music. However, I tend to think that punk, heavy metal and alternative are the three major sub-genres of rock and any one of those is general enough. Some bands are better described as indie rather than alternative, but I don't think that applies here. Alternative rock - Alternative can be quite a large label so I'd add rock to it to make it more specific. "Emo" is a label which can cover quite a few different genres and can be confusing. Alternative rock isn't a narrow genre either. However, I agree with you in that the best source would be some indication from the band themselves, but such self-classification may be hard to come by. --MikeUMA (talk) 03:35, 8 September 2011 (UTC)

Chris Walla?

How is there not yet ANY mention of today's huge news? There is no reason the article shouldn't have been updated yet with details of Chris Walla's departure. I would do it myself, but the article is protected apparently. Beachdude42 00:39, 14 August 2014 (UTC)

Genre

Various sources describe the band as "emo." There is a user who objects to this description. Genre labels are as subjective in music as they are in any art-form. Is there any reason for ignoring reliable sources in this case? 79.97.226.247 (talk) 19:47, 4 September 2014 (UTC)

Orphaned references in Death Cab for Cutie

I check pages listed in Category:Pages with incorrect ref formatting to try to fix reference errors. One of the things I do is look for content for orphaned references in wikilinked articles. I have found content for some of Death Cab for Cutie's orphans, the problem is that I found more than one version. I can't determine which (if any) is correct for this article, so I am asking for a sentient editor to look it over and copy the correct ref content into this article.

Band member timeline

There are several obstructing black lines coming from the left hand side of the timeline that seem to be related to the album/single/EP releases, but I can't figure out what is causing that to happen. Anyone able to fix it? --Robotsy (talk) 02:23, 6 November 2020 (UTC)
