Q: There are many "rules" associated with this page. Why?

A: Recent deaths is one of the most-viewed articles in Wikipedia. Deaths in 2023 was one of the most-read Wikipedia articles in 2023, with over 48 million views.[1] It is important that such a high-profile article have factual information presented in a consistent format.

Q: Why are there redlinks or redirects (deceased subject with no Wikipedia article) listed in the article?

A: Many notable people die before a Wikipedia article is written about them. The regular editors of this page have agreed that a death notice without an English-language article may remain for one month after the death, so that an article may develop. If there is no article after one month, then the death notice is removed from the list.

Q: Why is each death sourced by a simple citation only?

A: Each month, over 1000 deaths are reported. If the "cite news" template were used in each entry, the page would be slower to load as each instance of the template is rendered. Editors have decided by consensus to use a simpler cite in the form <ref>[url, title]</ref>.

Q: Why are dead animals sometimes listed in the article?

A: Many animals (like Lonesome George) achieve notability similar to humans during their life. This article reports the death of any notable biological life with its own article, not just humans.

Q: I saw on social media that a notable person has just died. May I add this death to the list?

A: Material about living persons (or recently deceased) that is unsourced or poorly sourced is removed immediately and without waiting for discussion (WP:BLP). Blogs and social media sites are generally considered to be unreliable. Every death listed must be supported by a reference from a reliable, independent source.

Q: A new month started five days ago. Why are deaths in the old month still appearing here?

A: It takes some time for deaths to be reported in the media and published here. Editors have agreed to keep the old month listed in the article for seven days after the new month begins. After that time, the "old" deaths are transferred to the article Deaths in <old month name>.

Q: Why is there sometimes a date without entries at the top of the page?

A: A new date is added after a new day starts in the time zone that first starts a new day. A relevant time clock can be found here.

January 25 - Rick France, 85, British speedway rider. (Death sourced on his page by Facebook)
March - Tommy Duncan, 87, Scottish footballer (Death sourced on his page by Twitter)
April - Danny O'Donnell, 85, Scottish footballer (Brentford, Brechin City, Tonbridge)

I don't see TimesNowNews as a reputable reliable source. A much better source would be The Guardian, but for me his inclusion would be a dubious, one-trick notability magnified only by his death. (Widespread internet reports of his death do not assert an automatic notability for him.) The pig kidney transplant first has not so far been seen as worthy of having its own event article, so there's currently nothing to redirect to from an entry. Owen John Thomas[edit]

The postnominal letters for a member of the National Assembly for Wales were AM (for 'Assembly Member') not MNA (presumably 'Member of the National Assembly'?) as currently shown in the list. Could this be corrected please? 217.155.59.206 (talk) 12:17, 15 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Not so. The body is now known as the Senedd and a representative is therefore a Member of the Senedd or MS for short. Your analysis was true prior to 2020, when the body was known as the National Assembly for Wales. - Derek R Bullamore (talk) 12:45, 15 May 2024 (UTC) PS. I'm aware of the change in 2020 thank you, which is why I wrote that the postnominal letters were AM not that they are. I think it's reasonable that the description should be correct for the time in which the individual in question served, thus AM, not MS. Canadian retirement AND questionable claims of compound surnames[edit]

Arthur Irving is being shown as chairman of Irving Oil "since 1992". The company's website announced his death referring to him as "Chairman Emeritus" and a source linked in his article indicates that he stepped down as substantive chairman in October 2023.

I note that someone re-alphabetized Mary Wells Lawrence from "Lawrence" to "Wells" and a while back the listing on the death of Mary Higgins Clark was moved from "Clark" to "Higgins". While Wells Rich Greene was founded before Mary Wells married Harding Lawrence,both women used their husbands' surnames and I don't think they claimed compound surnames...does any "alpha by author" catalogue list Mrs. Clark under "H"?71.105.190.227 (talk) 07:50, 16 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
