When did Saybrook become Deep River?[edit]

I always imagened that Deep River was a section within the Town of Saybrook. Presumably the current name was adopted to avoid confusion with Old Saybrook. The Old Saybrook Web site implies that Deep River was once a part (parish?) of the original, larger Saybrook.

In New England, this type of separation is common, and is normally described even a brief town history. Such detail should be part of this article.

The article states that several nearby towns were offshoots of Deep River. This seems counter to the idea that today's towns were originally portions of a larger town called Saybrook.Monomoit (talk) 23:01, 6 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Saybrook Colony was broken up into seven towns (plus parts of two other towns) as can be seen in the "Town created from Deep River" section. For about a hundred years, both Saybrook and Old Saybrook existed at the same time. Old Saybrook broke off from Saybrook in 1852 (which itself split into Essex and modern Old Saybrook two years later) and the remaining portion of the original Saybrook Colony was now the same as modern Deep River at this time. Saybrook changed its name to Deep River in 1947. --Polaron | Talk 00:59, 7 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
