ADDED TALKING DEFECT DETECTOR AUDIO LINKS[edit]

Well, it has been a long time! I was in college in Buffalo way back in '96 when I first stumbled onto the WNYRHS website, and Wiki wasn't around back then. I'm glad these sound clips were still on their website, so this article could benefit!216.170.144.5 13:39, 2 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

How are speed and train length measured?[edit]

I can see how many of these work (hotbox, clearance envelope, hanging equipment, axle count), but I can't figure out how you measure both speed and length just by watching the train go by. If you know one, you can calculate the other from the transit time, but I don't see how you can get both of those simultaneously. It would be good if somebody could update the article with something about this. -- RoySmith (talk) 14:12, 1 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

There are two axle sensors so the system can compute the speed of the train every time an axle passes. At that point you just keep track of x = vt for each between space between axles and add it up.Sturmovik (talk) 11:58, 2 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
This article is on my list of articles to improve with references, I will see what I can dig up today. Trainsandotherthings (talk) 14:14, 1 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Whatcha got, rail union, workers, railfans? Doug Grinbergs (talk) 09:41, 16 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I would hold off until it is determined if or how a hotbox detector was involved and even then it would not need a new section, just a referenced blurb discussing the limitations of the current technology.Sturmovik (talk) 19:47, 16 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

There are indications that it was detected. One source says by three detectors prior to the derail. Unfortunately I'm unable to find a reliable source, so just leave it here for now. Gjxj (talk) 05:06, 23 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

This article just shows North American ones[edit]

The scope of the atricle just narrows down on the situation in North America. However, there are similar devices across the World. e.g de:Heißläuferortungsanlage or just the situation in the UK could be implemented into the Article - Adtonko (talk) 13:08, 4 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
