Origin of name - Defying Ocean's End[edit]

WildernessForever undid a posting by Vincent Pearse. The post had stated that the name "Defying Ocean's End" was borrowed from a previously published book "Ocean's End" that highlighted the same topic (the ocean conservation crisis) four years prior. Although the two names are very similar and this contributor (WildernessForever) had originally come to the same conclusion as Mr. Pearse, it turns out that the name similarity is a coincidence and thus Pearse's edit was not factual. The actual origin of the name Defying Ocean's End comes from a prior Conservation International agenda-building conference entitled "Defying Nature's End". That conference focused entirely on terrestrial biodiversity. So, when the organization decided to lead a similar process for the ocean, the name was switched to "Defying Ocean's End".

A 3rd conference, "Defying Nature's End: The Africa Context" is discussed on the Wikipidia entry for Conservation International. All three titles are likely attributed to Dr. Claude Gascon, a senior vice-president at Conservation International. WildernessForever (talk) 08:06, 18 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
